When Avinox launched its new, even more powerful, M2S drive unit earlier this year, YT was among the 20 or so brands that announced new bike models to go along with it. At the time, the brand only shared details about the tricked-out, top-of-the-range Decoy X Launch Edition. That bike is now being joined by a four-bike CORE range with prices ranging from €4,499 to €7,499.

YT Decoy X CORE Details

All of the Decoy X CORE models are built around the same hydroformed aluminum frame with 160mm of V4L (Virtual Four Link) rear-wheel travel, a 170mm fork, and a mixed-wheel configuration. With plenty of travel and a fairly aggressive geometry, the Decoy X falls into YT’s e-enduro category. 

The new Avinox M2S drive unit is shared across the Decoy X range. This powerful new motor puts out up to 1,300W of peak power and 130Nm of torque, with shorter bursts of up to 1500W and 150Nm of torque in Boost mode. All CORE models and frame sizes also get the 800Wh battery for maximum range.

Geometry

YT gave the Decoy X a geometry that reflects its e-enduro intended use. It’s long, slack, and low, and looks ready to get after just about anything you’re willing to ride it down. It has a flip-chip that makes some minor changes to the head tube and seat tube angles for those who like to tinker with their setup. 

Some of the key figures include the 64.2 (H) /63.9 (L) degree headtube angle, the 78.4 (H) / 78.1 (L) degree seat tube angle, and 442mm chainstay across all sizes. Reach measurements start at 435mm on size small, and grow in 20mm increments, up to 515mm on the XXL. Check out the chart below for the nitty-gritty details.

When DJI/Avinox launched its first eMTB drive unit, now known as the M1, two years ago, it became the most powerful motor on the market. With 850W of peak power and up to 105Nm of torque, it quickly gained popularity with many consumers equating “most powerful” with “best.” But the M1 drive system proved to be more than just powerful. It also received high praise for other elements of its performance, including low weight, tunability, and controlled power delivery.

Still, the Avinox M1 motor kicked off what we and others have been calling the eMTB “motor power wars.” It wasn’t long before Specialized came out with its 3.1 and 3.1 S-Works motors on the Levo 4. These stayed below the official US federal 750W nominal power cap, but cranked torque up to 101Nm and 111Nm, respectively. A recent over-the-air update has since turned those peak power numbers up again – to 810W for the standard 3.1 motor and 850W on the S-Works version.

Similarly, Bosch unlocked more power from its popular Performance Line CX drive units with an over-the-air update, cranking its numbers up to 750W and 100Nm of torque. A second recent Bosch CX over-the-air update has since turned the peak torque up one more time to 120Nm, while keeping peak power at 750W.

So, when Avinox announced the new, and significantly more powerful, M2S drive unit, many people, myself included, were taken aback by its power specs.

With continuous peak power up to 1300W and up to 130Nm of torque, it upped the power ante by a significant margin. And let’s not forget the short-term Boost modes topping out at a whopping 1500W and 150Nm of torque. To be clear, the M2S is still limited to 20mph in the USA and 25kph in Europe, so just because it’s more powerful doesn’t mean you can actually exceed that speed limit. Or really even ride it any faster than other eMTBs.

Now, I’ve never ridden an Avinox-powered bike. But I’ve spent plenty of time on the Specialized 3.1 and Bosch CX, both of which I find to have significantly more power than I actually use. So, I’ve often wondered who actually needs or wants a motor that powerful? Based on the twenty model avalanche of Avinox M2S-equipped bikes that launched on the same day as the motor system, it seems like MANY brands in the industry are convinced that A LOT of people want a motor that powerful.

Until I ride one myself, I can’t pass too much judgment. But my colleague Cory Benson can, and has.

He’s had the chance to ride both the M1 and M2S drive units, and been quite impressed. Although, he says he rides the latest Amflow in substantially detuned Trail & Auto modes most of the time, really appreciating the ability to adjust power output to his riding style. Plus, he’s spent a lot of time on the updated S-Works 3.1 motor too, and describes its peak power output as surprisingly similar to the latest Avinox system. OK, maybe excluding the rocketship Boost button. He talks about how he doesn’t feel like the max power numbers are fairly comparable from one eMTB or one e-bike motor to the next.

What worries me, however, is the seemingly blatant disregard for e-bike motor power regulations, which, in the U.S., is set at a maximum of 750W (apparently max 750W nominal on a federal level and max 750W peak in some states, it’s frankly kinda confusing). It’s a slippery slope, particularly in the face of increasing regulations. For example, if/when California’s proposed SB 1167 bill passes, motors with power specs exceeding the 750W limit can no longer be classified or sold as “e-bikes” in the state.

So what’s the deal with Avinox creating such a powerful drive unit?

It seems a lot comes down to how unclear the power output rules and regulations really are, and whether there is a clear international testing standard for e-bike motor power – be it ‘peak’, ‘maximum’, or ‘nominal’ power, or even if it is measured directly at the motor or at the rear wheel?

Well, the Avinox press team sent out an email yesterday explaining their own power output justification. They titled it: “Avinox Pursues Power with Purpose,” and in it, they make their case for “more power in mountain biking.

Whichever side of the argument you stand on, it’s worth a read.

As for us, for the time being, we’re going to keep testing out all the different eMTB powertrain systems that keep popping up, and sharing our own individual real-world thoughts on riding them.

In mountain biking, power is often misunderstood. For some, higher motor output raises concerns about safety, trail impact, or component wear. For Avinox, power is not about excess, but about possibility. Power can help more people ride farther, climb steeper, and tackle terrain that might otherwise be out of reach.

A recent news story from Colorado’s Front Range reports that law enforcement is “cracking down” on e-bikes. Well, not e-bikes, actually. The report calls them “modified e-bikes” in some places and “high-powered electric bikes” in others. 

And so continues the apparent confusion surrounding the conversation.

To be fair, the article makes a decent attempt at explaining what makes these “motorized bikes” different. However, the confusion over terms and definitions that has hung over the bike industry for the last few years persists. 

So, how exactly should we deal with these “e-bikes” causing all this fuss?

Well, a proposed California bill, SB 1167, aims to define what an e-bike is and what it is not. Furthermore, the bill intends to make it illegal for retailers to use the term “e-bike” when what they are selling clearly isn’t.

Local Municipalities Addressing the “E-Bike” Issue

News stories like the one linked above are a dime a dozen. In fact, “e-bikes” have been causing problems across the country for quite a while now (I know there will be a lot of you who love that sentence).

And, mainly, it has been local authorities taking local action in response to the issue. Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, tripled fines for “electric bike violations.” Other places, such as Westlake Village in California, banned “e-bikes” from the city’s parks, sidewalks, trails, and fields.

Stories from Nevada, Utah, Oregon, New Jersey, and Florida (I could easily go on and on) populate a search engine when looking into the subject. Across the country, local municipalities are taking action. Why? Well, there is another side to these news stories. 

Neurosurgens at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California, are noticing a spike in head-related injuries connected to “e-bikes.” And, of course, there are the deaths. Tragically, a teen was recently killed riding an “electric bike” in San Jose, CA. The problem stretches beyond the states, with the tragic deaths of two teens in Australia just a few weeks ago.

Again, sadly, I could go on and on with news stories of teens dying due to a crash on their “e-bike.”

But if we look at each of these stories and the many others available, we begin to see a theme. Often, the “e-bikes” involved in these tragic accidents likely are not the e-bikes we are concerned about showing up at our local trailhead

In fact, they aren’t really e-bikes at all. At least not how we define them. No, these machines fall outside the three-class system we’ve adopted for e-bikes. According to California, they are mopeds and e-motos.

What is the Issue?

The conversation surrounding this issue typically includes “confusion” around the e-bike classification system. 

  • Class 1: pedal assist only up to 20MPH
  • Class 2: pedal assist and throttle up to 20MPH
  • Class 3: pedal assist only up to 28MPH

But it seems that a lot of the confusion stems from an important piece of information that is often left out: power output. Often, the conversation focuses on the potential MPH and whether or not the bike has a throttle. 

Regardless of whether an e-bike falls under Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3, there is a specific maximum power output it cannot exceed. That number is 750 watts. 

In nearly all of these cases, the individuals (often teens) are on something with a power output well above 750W. Platforms like Amazon sell these “e-bikes,” where a quick search provides results of machines boasting 1,500W and 2,500W — in some cases up to 6,500W — of power.

The major rub is that despite the excessive power of these bikes, the term “e-bike” is often still used to describe them. Many, including the state of California, argue that this is intentional. As you look at the news stories, another common thread pops up: teens. It is more commonly teenagers involved in these accidents, sustaining injuries (in some cases dying), or getting issued tickets.

And it is very often parents who are buying the “e-bikes” for their teenagers. If these parents knew when they clicked “order” that they were buying something closer to an electric motorcycle, sales would likely go down. If they knew that what they were buying required a license, registration, and insurance, they’d likely look for something else.

Parents are more likely to buy an “e-bike” for their 14-year-old than an “e-dirt bike.” So, “e-bike” it remained.

Taking Action at the State Level

Earlier this year, we began to see states take action. One of the first was New Jersey, which passed a bill to institute significant changes regarding the e-bike conversation.

In January, former New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill requiring e-bike riders to have a license. The bill also requires registration and insurance for the e-bike. 

But New Jersey’s new law doesn’t distinguish between power output and classification. Rather, due to the apparent confusion around what an e-bike is, the law applies to all e-bikes in the state. Now it is still unclear whether the law applies to something like the Lauf eElja that someone might ride off-road at a local trailhead. However, it certainly applies to something like the Ridley E-Kanzo on a morning commute to work.

Both the Lauf and Ridley are Class 1 e-bikes with top pedal-assisted speeds of 20 mph and no throttle.

Many consider New Jersey’s law overreaching. Regardless, new regulations like this pose a significant threat to the bike industry during the current e-bike boom. And, the mainstream bike industry’s current power race isn’t helping with drive units that clearly exceed the 750W limit

California is another state looking to do something. But, rather than take action against everything dubbed “e-bike,” they’ve decided to go after those who may really be causing the problem. 

California is going after retailers selling e-motos as e-bikes.

California SB 1167

The e-bike classification system isn’t too complicated for California Senator Catherine Blakespear. Rather than lumping everything with an electric motor into one category, Sen. Blakespear and her office clearly recognize the difference between 750W and 6,500W. 

The proposed bill targets those advertising and selling “e-bikes” that clearly fall outside the defined e-bike classification system.

Faster and more powerful electric motorcycles are being marketed as e-bikes, which is dangerous to children and adults,” Sen. Blakespear said in a press release for the bill. “SB 1167 makes clear to consumers whether they are buying an e-bike, which has defined limits for power and speed, or something else.”

The proposed bill, California SB 1167, expressly states that misrepresentations of these electric vehicles that exceed the designated 750W are illegal. The law draws a clear line regarding the current classification system, requiring sellers of more powerful “vehicles” to inform consumers that the product doesn’t meet the definition of an “e-bike.”

With the explosion of the e-bike market and more people riding these types of vehicles, there have been growing concerns about rider and traffic safety and what consumers need to know,” Andrew LaMar, Communications Director of Sen. Blakespear’s office, told us. 

Among other things, SB 1167 makes two significant changes to the current system. First, retailers won’t be allowed to advertise something as an “e-bike” that exceeds 750W. Secondly, the bill requires retailers to inform potential buyers that operating these types of vehicles requires a license, insurance, and registration. 

So, can a parent be held liable for purchasing an e-moto for their kid (hopefully they don’t) who rips around town and causes an accident? Well, no; concerning legal action, SB 1167 applies only to sellers (online and brick-and-mortar) and manufacturers of e-bikes, and can only be enforced in California.

Any vendor selling into the California market would have to abide by California laws,” LaMar said. “[Failure to do so] would be a violation of the Business and Professions code and the vehicle code. That could result in fines.”

This means that bikes like the Burchda RX80 (I haven’t heard of this one), an “Off Road Fat Tire Ebike” with a choice of 1,500W or 3,000W, will no longer be able to use the term “e-bike” in California. 

SB 1167 Affects More than Amazon E-bikes

Who cares about something like a Burchda RX80 or any other brand on platforms like Amazon? Forcing them to use correct terminology and make sure buyers understand what they are purchasing is ultimately a good move.

It certainly seems more focused and more likely to address the e-moto problem compared to New Jersey’s blanket e-bike law.

However, major industry brands may also find their California markets disrupted. Thanks to a recent power update, Specialized Turbo Levo 4 owners now have access to 810W of power, or up to 850W for S-Works owners. Avinox, which already exceeded 750W, recently released its M2S motor, pushing the limits up to 150Nm and 1,500W of peak power. 

Even Aventon’s Ultro X technically has too much power. However, they claim 750W of power output, with a “Boost” option that reaches 850W. 

These vehicles you referenced, if they have more than 750W of power, do not meet the current legal definition of an e-bike in California and so could not be sold or marketed as e-bikes,” LaMar clarified. 

So, perhaps a category change for some brands is in order? Or maybe they’ll realize 750W is plenty of power?

Sen. Blakespear’s office confirmed some dates with us. On April 7, the Senate Transportation Committee heard and passed SB 1167. Just a few days ago, on May 14th, the bill passed its second reading with amendments and was referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee, where it is currently pending. SB 1167 has until August 31 to pass with the Governor’s signature. 

Without any significant setbacks, SB 1167 will be California law by January 1, 2027.

There looks to be more trouble for RAD Power Bikes on the horizon. The brand has faced quite a bit of turmoil in the past few months, but this one likely takes the cake.

On April 28, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against RAD in the Alabama court system.

Recent issues with RAD stretch back to November of last year, when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning concerning batteries. The CPSC report read that RAD’s “hazardous batteries can unexpectedly ignite and explode, posing a fire hazard to consumers, especially when the battery or the harness has been exposed to water and debris.”

The apparent issue involved two different RAD batteries, affecting quite a few of the brand’s e-bikes.

This is where we’d typically see a recall issued. However, RAD did not comply with the CPSC’s recall. Simply put, recalling over 100,000 batteries would surely put the brand out of business. RAD was already struggling amid rumors of layoffs and factory closures.

Weeks after we covered the un-recall recall, RAD confirmed the rumors when they filed for bankruptcy.

But RAD stood by their batteries. In an update following the news of the recall, they noted that the “reported 31 incidents are from 100,000+ batteries, a fraction of a percent of total batteries sold.” They would go on to say: “Rad Power Bikes firmly stands behind our batteries and our reputation as leaders in the ebike industry, and strongly disagrees with the CPSC’s characterization of certain Rad batteries as defective or unsafe.”

The Recall issued by the CPSC acknowledged the 31 incidents. “CPSC is aware of 31 reports of fire, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500. Some of these incidents occurred when the battery was not charging, the product was not in use, and the product was in storage.”

According to the CPSC report, only property damage occurred. However, that seems to have changed with this latest news, which we first saw reported in Bicycle Retailer. According to the lawsuit, Shannon Stephens filed a wrongful death lawsuit against RAD a handful of weeks ago. The lawsuit also lists one of their Florida-based retailers as a co-defendant.

The lawsuit claims that a fire broke out on January 3, 2025, allegedly caused by a RAD Power Bike battery. Sadly, Shannon’s husband, Keith Stephens, died as a result of the fire. She was injured but was able to escape.

A Florida bike shop is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit because it assembled the bike. According to the lawsuit, the Stephens’ son purchased the bike as a gift for Keith, picking it up from the bike shop in Florida before delivering it to his father in Alabama.

The lawsuit further claims that RAD was well aware of the dangers posed by its e-bike batteries and failed to address them. The court document reads:

Rad Power Bikes’ awareness of the danger is confirmed by its own conduct. After multiple fires involving its e-bikes, the company quietly introduced a new battery enclosure branded “Safe Shield™,” claiming enhanced thermal protection and internal safeguards. But Rad never issued a recall. It issued no consumer alerts. It never disclosed that its earlier battery design lacked the UL safety certification necessary to prevent fires, explosions, and battery ruptures. Instead, Rad attempted to bury the danger beneath marketing language—promoting “Safe Shield™” as a routine upgrade rather than what it truly was: a belated fix for a known and deadly fire risk.”

While this most recent recall was issued some ten months after the Stephens’ tragic accident, the lawsuit also mentions previous incidents. The lawsuit claims that “Rad Power Bikes has been sued for similar fires before. Other homes have burned. Other families have suffered. People have died.

We have yet to see any response from RAD, but we’ll continue to follow this story and provide updates when available.

Cannondale has been making the Moterra eMTB for quite a few years now. It has been updated and refined numerous times, and now, the latest version has arrived in the North American market. The redesigned Moterra comes in two travel options, standard and LT, both of which feature the Bosch Performance Line CX drive system. With the new Bosch Performance Upgrade 2.0, riders now have one of the most powerful motors on the market with up to 120Nm of torque.

The new Moterra and Moterra LT slot into the lineup alongside the lightweight Moterra SL. With the all-rounder 150mm Moterra and the 165mm e-enduro Moterra LT, Cannondale has more options for riders to find the eMTB that best suits their riding style, terrain, and preferences. Let’s check them out.

Cannondale Moterra Details

As mentioned above, the new Moterra comes in two configurations. The standard Moterra is the do-it-all version with 150mm of rear travel. The Moterra LT is the e-enduro machine with 165mm of rear travel. Both versions share the latest Bosch Performance Line CX drive unit. With the optional Bosch Performance Upgrade 2.0, riders can now boost the performance values of the drive unit up to 600% support and up to 120Nm of torque. 

Most of the Moterra models come with the Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh battery for long-lasting range. The base model Moterra 4 Alloy comes with the 600Wh option. The batteries are removable and interchangeable, plus the system is compatible with the 250Wh Bosch PowerMore range extender.

The Moterra models come with varying controls depending on the trim level. The top-of-the-line Moterra 1 comes with the Top Tube System Controller w/ the Kiox 500 display and wireless remote, while the Moterra 2 uses the Kiox 300 display. The Moterra LT gets the Top Tube System Controller with remote, but no fancy display. The more affordable alloy-framed Moterra 3 uses the Purion 200, while the 4 and 4+ feature the all-in-one Bosch LED Remote.

Cannondale calls the standard Moterra “the all-mountain adventure machine,” which is “for the seekers, the adventurers, the go-fast and go-long riders who live to see what’s over the next ridge, and the one after that.” It is available with a full carbon frame or a SmartForm Alloy, both of which roll on 29” wheels front and rear.

Like the recently launched Bad Habit enduro bike, the Moterra models use a 4-bar, or Horst Link suspension design. This controls the 150mm of rear wheel travel, which has been paired with a 160mm travel fork. Like many of Cannondale’s other full suspension bikes, the Moterra Carbon has what the brand refers to as Proportional Response design, which includes size-specific geometry and suspension kinematics.

According to Cannondale, they were able to shave nearly 1,000 grams off carbon frames used for the Moterra 1 and 2 compared to the previous model. The Alloy-framed Moterra 3, 4, and 4+ don’t get the size-specific chainstay treatment.

Moterra Geometry

The Moterra Carbon and Moterra Alloy have very similar, but not identical, geometries. One of the biggest discrepancies is that the Moterra Carbon has a 64.4-degree head tube angle, whereas the Alloy version is a touch steeper at 64.8 degrees. The other notable difference is that the Alloy frames have 455mm chainstays across all sizes, while the Carbon version increases to 460mm on the L and XL frames.  

Otherwise, the numbers appear to reflect the bike’s trail/all-mountain intended use quite nicely, with relatively standard reach measurements and adequately steep effective seat tube angles. It comes in S, M, L, and XL. Check out the charts below for all the details

Moterra LT

The Moterra LT has more travel and mixed wheels for going full enduro.

LT stands for long-travel, and the Moterra LT bumps up to 165mm in the rear and a 170mm fork. With this e-enduro bike, Cannondale went with a mixed wheel/mullet configuration to give riders a little more butt clearance and maneuverability in the aggressive terrain this bike was designed for. It comes in carbon-only and features Cannondale’s Proportional Response design with size-specific geometry and kinematics. Speaking of, the LT reportedly has a more progressive leverage ratio to go along with the coil shock that comes stock on the complete build.

Geometry-wise, it’s quite similar to the standard Moterra with a 64.4-degree head tube angle and 77.5-degree seat tube. With the smaller rear wheel, the chainstays are a bit shorter at 445mm on the S and M, growing to 450mm on the L and XL. Check out the chart below for more.

The Buzz Beekeeper is a sub-$1000 cargo e-bike

Cargo e-bikes can easily creep into 4-digit price tags. In fact, most do. But not Buzz. The brand has been around since 2019, making folding and commuter-style e-bikes.

And now they’ve added the Beekeeper to their lineup. The Beekeeper is a mini-mullet (24×20) cargo e-bike with a claimed 40-mile range between charges. And, best of all, it costs less than the 4-digits we’re used to seeing.

Who is Buzz?

It isn’t Kevin’s brother from Home Alone. Well, Buzz is Kevin’s brother in the Christmas classic, but not in this context.

Honestly, I hadn’t heard of them either. But availability at Walmart.com and, especially, Huffy.com gives a pretty good hint. United Wheels Limited owns Buzz.

If you’re not familiar with United Wheels, they are the parent company of brands such as Huffy, Batch, and Niner. United Wheels launched Buzz as the dedicated e-bike corner of their bike portfolio.

However, it was a bit more than that. Buzz also helps meet the needs of a changing transportation system. Especially in urban areas, more people are ditching their cars and going for electric commuters. 

And Buzz makes that transition a bit easier by offering their e-bikes at a pretty affordable price. Like the Beekeeper, a cargo e-bike for $800. 

However, it’s not $800 right now. Despite the press material claiming a price tag of $800, if you’ve already looked at Huffy’s or Walmart’s website, you’ll see a price tag of $999. It seems that the $200 savings are for different sales that Buzz has already run and will hopefully run again.

Regardless, a sub-$1,000 is a pretty good deal for a cargo e-bike. 

So, What is the Beekeeper?

Good question. The Buzz Beekeeper is a massive mixed-wheel (24” up front, 20” rear) cargo e-bike. It falls into the class 2 e-bike category, which means assistance kicks off at 20 MPH (likely a bit before). However, class 2 does have a throttle.

The Beekeeper is equipped with a rear-hub motor producing 60Nm of torque and 500W of peak power. This power is paired to a 500Wh battery and boasts (up to) 40 miles between charges. 

And Buzz says the battery takes 6-7 hours to charge fully. There is also a center-mounted LCD screen displaying information such as speed, assist level, and battery life. A controller mounted on the left handlebar allows the rider to switch between modes and power the Beekeeper on and off.

Now, who made the battery and motor? We don’t know, and Buzz doesn’t say. 

And it is big. How big? Well, again, Buzz doesn’t say. The wheelbase is obviously long, but no geometry chart is provided. However, the Beekeeper does have a dropper seatpost, and Buzz says it fits riders from 5’2” up to 6’3”. 

Obviously, it’s also a cargo bike, and those tend to carry, well, cargo. The Beekeeper has a carrying capacity of 400lbs on the extended rear platform rack. Buzz also offers several accessories for the Beekeeper, including a front rack and pannier bags.

Mondraker's Crafty Unlimited Icon celebrates 10 years of the e-bike

“Unlimited” is the label Mondraker gives to their most premium and exclusive bikes. We saw it not long ago with the Crafty Unlimited Gulf, a bike celebrating their collaboration with the motorsports brand.

Just a handful of months later, Mondraker is going Unlimited again. This time, they are celebrating a decade of the Crafty as their flagship eMTB platform. So, clearly, they went with the latest and greatest, most powerful Avinox drive unit, correct? 

No. Despite the new ZENDIT having all that Avinox power, Mondraker stayed with the Bosch for the Unlimited Crafty Icon.

Why Bosch Over Avinox?

It is a good question, and one that has two answers. The first is more speculative, but I think it stands to reason. Mondraker just released a different Unlimited version of this bike in January. This was before the Avinox release, with the Crafty Unlimited Gulf featuring a Bosch motor. 

Another “Unlimited” bike, released a few months later, will essentially be the same platform. Likely the same components (we’ll get into that later) and likely new paint. But the same platform, nonetheless.

But there is another reason Mondraker stuck with a Bosch motor. For 10 years, the Crafty has had a Bosch drive unit. The Crafty was an early adopter of the first generation of the Bosch Performance Line CX. Bosch designed the motor specifically for eMTB, and Mondraker saw an opportunity to build the Crafty around it.

The Crafty Unlimited Icon celebrates 10 years of the platform, something that wouldn’t have happened without Bosch.

But just because Mondraker isn’t using the new Avinox motor doesn’t mean this Bosch-equipped bike is a slouch. No, with the release of the Crafty Unlimited Icon comes a new Bosch update.

As of May, the 5th-generation Bosch CX and CX-R are getting a boost. A software update increases torque from 100Nm to 120Nm and maximum pedal assistance from 400% to 600%. 

The Bosch Update

The dirty details that most will care about regarding the Bosch update are the power increases mentioned above. However, Mondraker notes that all that power doesn’t mean much if you can’t control it. 

Along with the power update, Bosch is also updating/adding features to their eBike Flow app. First, the software allows the motor to pre-tension the drivetrain, which helps prevent the motor and rear wheel from freewheeling on techy bits of trail. This means the Mondraker Crafty, or any other Bosch-equipped bike, responds directly to pedal input, creating a more predictable experience. 

The Mondraker Crafty Unlimited Icon will have a few other cool features thanks to the Bosch update. One addition to the app will be “Trick Check,” a new feature that tracks jump time, wheelies, manuals, and stoppies. 

Bosch will continue to allow you to personalize the drive unit’s settings. Extended Boost will be available and customizable across all riding modes. The app will also now pair with Garmin devices, allowing you to monitor speed, range, and battery.

Wait, isn’t that information Bosch already displays? Well, yes, if you have a bike equipped with the Kiox 400C display screen. If not, you’ll need to pull out your phone and log in to the app, unless you pair it with something like a Garmin watch.

Mondraker Crafty Unlimited Icon

So now we know that Mondraker equips the Crafty Unlimited Icon with an updated Bosch CX-R drive unit. But the rest of the bike must be pretty special, right?

I mean, yeah. It is definitely a step up from Mondraker’s other Crafty builds, as far as components are concerned. And, from the looks of it, the Crafty Unlimited Icon receives the same build as the Unlimited Gulf, minus the matching paint.

The component highlights are an Ohlins RXF 38 M3 fork and TTX22 M.2 coil shock, set to 160mm and 150mm, respectively. DT Swiss handles the wheels, with their Hybrid HXC 1200 hoops laced to 180 hubs. The niche brake brand, Trickstuff, takes care of the stoppers with their Maxima brakes, and SRAM handles shifting with an XX-level T-Type drivetrain.

Basically, think of a top spec’d component, and it is likely the one Mondraker used on this bike.

Along with a top-spec component build, Mondraker also worked with local artists and craftsmen on frame details. From the paint to the graphics, artists like Jose Luis Romera, Elena Sanchez, and Adri Moralez spared no expense, hand-painting and designing the frame. The result is a satin-black frame with metallic holographic details.

Mondraker’s press material didn’t mention a price, but you’ve likely guessed that it is expensive. And, you probably guessed correctly. The very similar (exactly similar?) Crafty Unlimited Gulf will set you back $16,000. I imagine this bike has a similar price tag.

Bosch 120nm upgrade

Today, Bosch is unveiling their answer to the ebike power wars – and the answer isn’t more power. Instead, a firmware update for the Performance Line CX and CX-R motors will provide up to 120Nm of torque and 600% support.

Crucially, this is designed to give you more support in technical sections when you actually need it, “without giving you a motor bike.” That part about ‘when you actually need it’ is important, since it will keep the bike feeling more like a regular bike for more of the ride and it will also maximize the battery life and even potentially extend drivetrain life.

The update allows users to adjust torque output up to 120 Nm across any riding mode through the eBike Flow app, representing a significant increase from the standard 85 Nm baseline. However, the maximum torque setting is subject to individual bicycle manufacturer specifications.

Enhanced support levels can reach up to 600% assistance at speeds below 15 kph in specific riding conditions. As a refresher, power is used to describe the watts; this is still a 750-watt system. Support is also called “assistance” (used interchangeably by the industry). This is the amplification of the rider’s input. Depending on the drive unit and mode, support after 15 kph will drop back to default/previous maximums. 

The 600% support up to 15kph is available in RACE, TURBO, EMTB+, CARGO, and AUTO modes. Above 15kph, TURBO and AUTO modes have a max assist of 340%, whereas RACE, EMTB+, and CARGO modes have a max assist of 400%.

The system employs intelligent software that automatically delivers full power during demanding terrain situations, including steep climbs, technical root sections, and tight curve exits. This dynamic response requires active pedal input from the rider, with the system providing power boosts to match rider effort before returning to standard levels.

Essentially, it means that for most of your ride when you don’t need a ton of motor support, you can run it on TOUR+ or ECO+ modes to conserve battery. But when you get to a technical section where you need additional support to clear the obstacle, climb, etc., the bike will adjust to get you through it and then dial back down.

I got to do a brief parking lot test with an updated Ibis Oso (the parking lot at Sea Otter had some steep dirt hills to try this on), and it was awesome. On current Bosch eMTBs, I tend to ride in the eMTB mode but with this update, it makes me think I would probably back down to TOUR+ mode or lower. The added motor support is nearly immediate when you need it, and it seamlessly transitions back an forth without you noticing.

Bosch is releasing Performance Upgrade 2.0 as a free over-the-air update beginning May 4, 2026. The upgrade will be compatible with both Performance Line CX and Performance Line CX-R systems, without requiring hardware replacements or service appointments. And honestly, that’s one of the best parts about this upgrade. As Jeremy put it, instead of making riders feel like they need to rush out and buy the next shiny new thing that’s marginally better than the last, Bosh is taking a more sustainable and socially responsible approach and allowing riders to upgrade what they already own.

Adjustable Extended Boost

Along with increased support and torque, the Performance Upgrade will feature a new adjustable extended boost. This is when you’re trying to clear a root, rock, step, etc. and you are struggling to get over it and might not be able to get a full pedal stroke in. When this happens, the system is programmed to provide up to 2.2 yards or residual boost to help you get over the obstacle. This has been available since 2020, but new for 2026 is a slider in the Flow app that will allow you to adjust the length of the overrun setting for each riding mode.

Digital Drivetrain Tensioner

For the most direct response from your drivetrain, there is a new drivetrain tensioner feature that pre-tensions the drivetrain when it senses lag between the motor and the rear wheel. This is only available in eMTB or Race mode, and is meant to prevent drivetrain lash and give instant acceleration when you’re pushing the limits.

Measure Wheelies, Jumps, and more with Trick Check

This one is really just for fun, though if you’re trying to get better at manuals, wheelies, or jumping, it could actually be a useful tool. Trick Check will now record duration, hight, distance, and angle of jumps, wheelies, manuals, or stoppies, and will show the last trick on the display for eight seconds. Then you can dig into all the trick data at the end of the ride.

New 12A Fast Charger

Here’s another one Bosch riders have been waiting for – a 500w 12A fast charger. Compatible back to models from 2022, the charger includes smart thermal management and claims to charge a PowerTube 800 battery to 50% in just one hour.The charger is also fairly light and compact at 2lbs, so you can carry it with you and charge your bike at work or out on a tour. We’re told that the new charger will be available “by the end of 2026”.

What Models Get What Updates?

There are a number of different Bosch motors out there, and only some will get all of the updates mentioned above – basically just the BDU38 Performance Line CX and CX-R motors. But some will pick up some of the updates, though we’re a bit disappointed that we won’t be able to track wheelies on our cargo bikes…

Santa Cruz Bicycles is one of several brands that don’t attend Sea Otter. But Santa Cruz has been hosting a pre-Sea Otter industry gathering, which it calls “bike night,” for the past several years. It’s less of a “check out all of our cool new stuff” event, and more of a “let’s hang out and catch up” kinda vibe. Santa Cruz had the recently updated Nomad on display, but anything else was overshadowed by free beer, hot pizza, and good conversations.

But after the hustle and bustle of the Sea Otter expo last weekend, Santa Cruz dropped into our inboxes with some product update info. The popular and highly regarded Vala CC and Bullit CC eMTBs are both getting frame color updates, new builds, and some new integrated features. For the Vala CC, Santa Cruz is also introducing “Lite” builds with slightly lighter weights than the standard options.

Bullit CC: Updates

We covered the Santa Cruz Bullit eMTB when it launched last year, so if you’re interested in the details, you can find all the pertinent info here. Santa Cruz hasn’t made any major design changes to the bike. It still gets 170mm of rear wheel travel using a four-bar suspension design, runs a 170mm travel fork, and rolls on mixed wheel sizes. It’s powered by a Bosch CX drive system, with a 600 Wh battery. 

New Bullit Colors

Santa Cruz is offering the Bullit CC in two new frame colors this year. The new Matte Carbon/Purple Sunset Chameleon colorway has color-shifting graphics/decals. The other is Gloss Purple Smoke/Spring Green, which looks pretty classic for Santa Cruz.

New Bullit Builds

The Bullit CC is being offered in two new top-of-the-line builds, with the XT Di2 version also adding some integrated features.

Bullit XT Di2 Podium RSV: $13,499 (22.6 kg or 50 lbs.)

The top-tier Bullit CC build comes with a 170mm Fox Podium Factory inverted fork, a Fox DHX2 coil shock, SRAM Maven Silver brakes, Reserve 30|DH Carbon wheels w/ DT 350 DF anti-kickback hubs, and Maxxis Double Down Tires. It also features a Shimano XT Di2 drivetrain that’s hardwired to the bike’s battery for charging. Additionally, the wired derailleur connection supports manual, manual plus, and auto-shifting modes, which can reportedly be configured through the Bosch app.

Bullit XO AXS RSV: $12,599 (21.7 kg or 47.9 lbs.)

The XO build comes with the brand-new Fox 38 Factory Grip X2 fork, Float X2 Factory shock, and SRAM Maven Silver brakes. It rolls on Reserve 30|DH Carbon wheels with DT 350 DF anti-kickback hubs wrapped in Maxxis Double Down tires. The SRAM XO AXS Transmission drivetrain is hardwired to the bike’s battery, so you’ll never forget to charge it.

Vala CC: Updates

The Vala really broke the typical Santa Cruz mold when it launched a couple of years ago. The four-bar suspension design was a major departure from the brand’s signature VPP suspension, and it has been very well-received by testers and consumers alike. So, Santa Cruz isn’t messing with this winning formula, which you can learn more about in our launch article here.

Long story short, the Vala gets 150mm of rear travel using a four-bar suspension design, paired with a 160mm fork, and mixed wheel sizes. The Bosch CX drive unit provides the pedal assistance, with a 600Wh battery powering the system.

New Vala Colors

The Vala CC is offered in two new colorways. Gloss Slate Blue/Coral brings some classic Santa Cruz style, while the Matte Carbon/Gold Sparkle has a much stealthier appearance.

New Vala Builds

The Vala CC comes in a new XT Di2 RSV build with a wired and integrated derailleur. Santa Cruz is also introducing “Lite” builds to the Vala CC platform to save a little weight for those who are interested in doing so.

Vala CC XT Di2 RSV: $11,999 (21.3 kg or 47.1 lbs.)

The XT Di2 RSV build comes with the brand-new Fox Factory 38 Grip X2 fork, a Fox Float X Factory shock, and SRAM Maven Silver brakes. It rolls on Reserve 30|HD Carbon wheels using DT 350 DF anti-kickback hubs and Maxxis EXO+/Double Down tires. The Shimano XT Di2 derailleur is hardwired to the Bosch CX drive unit for charging. This integration also allows for manual-plus and auto-shifting modes to be set up through the Bosch Flow app.

New Vala “Lite” Builds

Santa Cruz says the new Lite builds “bridge the gap between full-power bikes and lightweight bikes by maintaining the same Bosch Performance CX Line motor and 600Wh battery, but making smart spec decisions that save lbs (or kgs).” 

They’ve given the Lite treatment to two of the Vala CC builds: the XT Di2 RSV described above, and the XX AXS RSV. The claimed weights of both options are 1.1 lbs less than their standard counterparts, which is lighter, but not exactly earth-shattering.

The XX Lite build closely mirrors the standard XX version, but drops weight by moving to a Fox Factory 36 Grip X2 fork, EXO+ tires front and rear, and a Chris King dropset headset. 

Vala CC XT Di2 Lite RSV: $11,999 (20.8 kg or 46 lbs.)

The Lite version moves to the Fox Factory 36 Grip X2 fork, EXO+ tires front and rear, and XT brakes.

The Sea Otter Classic is an exciting event, as we sometimes get to see the future of a brand’s offerings via prototypes. Well, this last Sea Otter was no different. The Southern California eBike brand, Aventon, has been enjoying some well-deserved success after the launch of its first full-suspension eMTB. Using that momentum to build on, they decided to display and tease us with a prototype of their new eGravel bike!

Before you guys get too excited, know my photos are kinda shite. Here’s why: I got to the Aventon booth on day one, and the bike was in a state of disassembly. That is to say that the componentry was in the midst of being exchanged.

So, thinking I would come back later, I just snapped a few photos. Well, I didn’t make it back to their booth to get proper photos of the completed bike. What? I was busy!

The photos of the assembled bike that you just saw were sent by Aventon and are credited as such. All the shitty photos are mine and are also credited as such.

Aventon’s Prototype eGravel Bike

There is one really important thing that will be part of the production model: the new motor. They developed the new motor to be a more compact and lightweight version of their proprietary Ultro motor found on the Current full-suspension eMTB. It’s called the UltroL, and looks to be quite a bit more compact than the UltroX.

The new eGravel bike will have a 500Wh battery. Aventon is shooting for 34lbs for a proposed total bike weight. Which I thought was impressive.

It’s been in development for a couple of years, but not quite as long as the Current was. Sizing is expected to be small to large, but there is a slight chance the small size will be cut depending on the medium’s sizing. Obviously, there is no pricing or even hints at any type of pricing.
