Restrap launched its Switch Rack Cargo System earlier this year. The original Switch Rack has already gotten glowing reviews and is part of a growing modular ecosystem of Switch-compatible bags and accessories, including panniers and the Switch-Top Bag. While this system is already highly regarded, thus far it has been reliant on a thru-axle mounting system.

Load up and roll out with the Restrap Switch Rack.

Since its launch, and apparently even before, the folks at Restrap say they’ve “been bombarded with questions about whether we would be creating a version that could be mounted to frames with traditional rack/mudguard eyelets.” Now, Restrap is answering those questions with a new direct-mount version of the Switch Rack. And for those who already own a Switch Rack, Restrap is making the Direct Mount Adaptors available to convert it.

Switch Rack – Direct Mount Details

We already covered the launch of the Switch Rack in detail, so if you’re interested in learning more about it, that article has all the info. Rather than redesigning the rack, Restrap is using the same chassis and has created an adaptor kit to modify it for use with traditional rack and/or mudguard eyelet mounts. This means a bike with a thru-axle is no longer a requirement to use the Switch Rack. It also means that riders will be able to move their Switch Rack between bikes with and without thru-axles as needed.

The Direct Mount hardware is designed to fit all bikes with horizontal/in-line M5 rack and/or mudguard mounts. By flipping the orientation of the adaptors, the Switch Rack – Direct Mount is claimed to fit frames with 135mm, 142mm, and 148mm axle spacing. It also comes with two lengths of M5 bolts, 40mm and 50mm, to provide options for the varying spacing and thicknesses of dropouts on different frames.

Switch Rack – Direct Mount: Pricing and Availability

Restrap is selling the Switch Rack – Direct Mount as a complete package for £107.99, €129.99, $161.99. Already own a Switch Rack? The Direct Mount Adaptors are also available, and they retail for 15.99, €18.99, $23.99. For more details or to buy, head to the Restrap website.

Restrap's new Switch Top Bag to go with their Switch Rack

You know a product is good when customers start asking for another to accompany it. ReStrap says that this is what happened when they released their Switch Rack. While most packs could be secured to the new rack, ReStrap didn’t have a specific bag to match it.

Well, now they do, with the Switch Top Bag (see what they did there with the name!). ReStrap says the bag is made to the highest of quality and expectations, seamlessly integrating into the Switch Rack system.

ReStrap Switch Top Bag

The Switch Top Bag is aerodynamic, waterproof, and, like other ReStrap products, features a quick-release mechanism, which doesn’t require tools. This makes attaching and removing the Switch Top Bag doable in seconds.

For a bikepacker, this makes the bag so easy to remove and take into your tent. It also features a carrying strap to make lugging it around a bit easier.

Overall, ReStrap categorizes the Switch Top Bag as a 15L bag. It features 13L of internal carrying capacity, plus an additional 2L in external mesh pockets.

ReStrap uses the Hiplok X Mount to attach the Switch Top Bag to the Switch Rack seamlessly. The bag is rectangular, featuring a roll-top with tension loops to secure the load. And, as already mentioned, the bag is fully waterproof, keeping items that must stay dry, well, dry.

The two external mesh pockets (one on each side) hold items you don’t mind getting wet. These are the ones you’ll want to access quickly: think snacks, sunscreen, and maybe a rain jacket.

The Switch Top Bag weighs 869g (including the fittings). It is handmade in the UK and retails for $262.99.

See how to install, remove, and how it works in ReStrap’s instructional video below:

Xtracycle’s new OmniTierra is one of the most unique bikes I saw at Sea Otter this year. While the brand is known primarily for its electric cargo bikes, they teamed up with Priority Bicycles and legendary adventure cyclist John Freeman — and his dog Mira — to create this unique, non-electric, titanium-framed mid-tail cargo bike. I met up with John Freeman, Mira, and the Xtracycle and Priority folks at the Gates booth at Sea Otter to check out the new OmniTierra before its official launch last Saturday.

sudio image of the Xtracycle OmniTierra cargo bike

According to Xtracycle, Freeman approached them in 2024 with the goal of helping them design the ideal cargo bike to suit his type of long-distance bikepacking and adventure riding. And, when they say long distance, they mean it. Reportedly, Freeman has ridden over 120,000km through 15 countries, and he does it with his dog Mira riding along with him. In the brief time we chatted, I was told about rides from his home in Alberta, Canada, to Peru and back again, with Mira by his side.

Mira the dog on the back of the OmniTierra cargo bike
It seemed to make Mira very happy to be in the basket on the back of John Freeman’s OmniTierra bike.

Built For Dog-Packing

Along with needing space to carry everything he needs for extended bike tours — clothing, food, water, tent, bedding, etc. — Freeman also needs room for his canine co-pilot, Mira. So, they designed the OmniTierra with cargo-carrying capability, not just for dogs, as one of its top priorities. But they also wanted to ensure that comfort and ride quality, a reasonable weight, durability, low maintenance, and versatility weren’t forgotten either. After several iterations and lots of testing, the finished product is what you see here.

John Freeman's Xtracycle OmniTierra cargo bike loaded upw ith all his gear.
John Freeman’s Xtracycle OmniTierra in the stock build, loaded up with all of his gear.

For ride quality and durability, the OmniTierra frame is made from titanium. It has a mid-tail cargo design with extra-long chainstays; the rear center length is not specified, but the wheelbase is listed at 1,320mm and 1,347mm on the medium and large frames, respectively. The long rear end accommodates the included heavy-duty rear rack and helps add stability when loaded with gear.

The rack’s weight limit is listed as 27kg (59.5 lbs.), which is more than enough for a mid-sized Border Collie-Heeler and a bunch of lightweight bikepacking gear. The frame also has loads of mounting points inside the front triangle, on the underside of the downtube, and on the top tube to attach bags or other items.

Versatility

The Xtracycle Omni-Tierra set up with a rigid fork and fat bike wheels and tires.
The Xtracycle folks had an OmniTierra on hand with a fat tire setup to demonstrate its versatility.

The OniTierra’s frame has been designed with versatility in mind, so riders can choose the wheel size and tire setup that works best for their needs. The frame has clearance for tires up to 29″ x 2.4″, which come on the stock build. It can also fit fat bike tires up to 26″ x 4″ (possibly wider depending on the model) if you’re using it for winter travel or in other loose conditions. An adjustable dropout system also appears to provide some length adjustment for varying wheel sizes and possibly a derailleur hanger for a mechanical drivetrain (see 2 photos down for more detail).

For fat-tire setups, riders will need to swap out the stock suspension fork for a fat-tire fork with more tire clearance. Xtracycle had the OmniTierra set up with a rigid carbon fat bike fork, fat tires, and carbon wheels at the show (see above), which apparently weighed 2 pounds less than the stock setup. I rode it around for a minute or two, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how light it felt and how intuitively it handled, even with the mid-length rear end, cargo rack, and fat tires.

Gearbox + Belt Drive = Low Maintenance

The Pinion C1.12 gearbox has wireless shifting, 12 gears, a 600% range, and requires minimal maintenance.

In keeping with the low-maintenance and durability theme, as well as the partnership with Priority, Xtracycle chose the Pinion SmartShift C1.12 gearbox and the Gates CDX Carbon Belt drivetrain setup. This 12-speed drivetrain features wireless shifting and a 600% gear range.

The Gates belt is quiet, never needs lubrication, and lasts 2-3x longer than a regular chain. Likewise, the sealed gearbox requires almost no maintenance — an oil change every 10,000km — and the electric shifting reportedly lasts 10,000 to 20,000 shifts between charges. One could argue that a belt-driven gearbox is the ideal bikepacking drivetrain.

The Gates CDX belt never needs lube and lasts a very long time.

Geometry

The OmniTierra is currently offered in 2 frame sizes, medium and large, with geometry numbers catering toward all-day comfort for long-distance riding. As such, it has moderate reach numbers of 434mm and 460mm, respectively, along with generous stack heights to keep riders in a fairly neutral seated pedaling position. The head tube angle is listed at 69 degrees, with a seat tube angle of 74 degrees.

Build Kit

The OmniTierra comes in one complete build with a Fox 34 SL Performance fork and 29″ wheels front and rear. According to Xtracycle the stock build in a size large, including the rear rack, weighs just 42 pounds. Full specs are listed below.

And it intentionally avoids 50mm tires because they're "the worst".

Open has always done things a little differently, and their latest bike takes that to a new level in the weirdest and most wonderful ways.

It’s aero, but designed for loaded bikepacking. And it’s light, even though you’re strapping a lot of stuff to it. And it’s how it achieves those competing interests that makes it so intriguing.

closeup view of framebags on the open up 2 adventure gravel bike.

Building on the foundation of the U.P.|U.P.PER. 2.0 frame, this new model integrates bikepacking features while maintaining the platform’s focus on speed across varied terrain.

low rear angle of open up 2 adventure u-turn fork.

The frame keeps its top tube bag mounts, adds three mounting eyelets under the toptube for strapless frame bag attachment, plus lots of bottle cage mounts on and under the downtube.

Later this year, they’ll also release a dedicated aero frame bag developed with Apidura.

U-Turn Adventure Fork

open up 2 adventure u-turn fork

Complete bikes and framesets come with the all-new OPEN U-Turn Adventure fork. Compared to the U-Turn Aero fork, the Adventure model is redesigned with a shallower leg profile to improve comfort…

open up 2 adventure u-turn fork shown empty and loaded.

…but it’s the integrated cargo slots that make it completely unique.

These slots let you strap soft bags or items with Voile straps directly to the fork legs without requiring additional cages, using the fork structure itself as support. For those preferring traditional setups, the included cargo barrels accommodate standard cage mounting, too.

They stick with their bolt-through brake mount, too, which means no in-molded rivnuts that (however unlikely) could work loose and become a failure point.

Geometry & Cockpit

closeup view of framebags on the open up 2 adventure gravel bike.

Each frame size has individualized geometry and tube shapes, built around OPEN’s A.I.R. geometry (Agile | Integrated | Refined) for “road bike-like agility” with larger gravel tires.

Side note: If you’ve ever dramatically changed the size of your tire and all of a sudden your bike handles weird, that’s because gravel bikes in particular have a huge range of tire size options, and they’re often optimized around a specific and narrow range. So, when a brand says it’s optimized for “X”, it’s probably more than just marketing speak. Here, you’d want to run 45mm tires to take full advantage of OPEN’s design.

front head tube view of open up 2 adventure gravel bike.

The OPEN B.A.R. cockpit system is an integrated handlebar available in 10 sizes with adjustable length (introduced here) that addresses the common fit limitations of one-piece bars.

Each bar allows 15mm of stem length adjustment in 5mm increments, enabling more precise positioning than traditional stems that typically jump in 10mm increments. Adjustments require only loosening clamps, repositioning components, and retightening.

Oh, and 50mm Gravel Tires are “the worst”

open up 2 adventure gravel bike shown in a field.

For tire selection, OPEN maintains that 50mm tires represent a performance compromise, which is putting it nicely. Actually, they say they’re the “valley of death”, offering the worst aerodynamics and the worst performance. They claim that 45mm tires on the ultra-wide modern rims offer the best aerodynamics and decent rolling.

closeup view of aerodynamic tube shaping on open up 2 adventure gravel bike.

Thus, the new OPEN U.P. 2.0 Adventure is designed around 45mm (and smaller) tires for aerodynamic benefits, with a maximum 46mm tire clearance.

Want to go bigger? Wait for the upcoming WI.DE 2.0, which is designed for 55mm and larger tires, which they say offer the least rolling resistance for the smoothest, fastest ride.

The new BMC Twostroke 01

BMC introduced the Twostroke in 2020, replacing the Teamelite. The bike sat nicely in both size and name next to its full suspension big brother, the Fourstroke.

But, in the last few years, the Twostroke has quietly disappeared from BMC’s website. Well, on their US site, that is. Now, the Swiss brand is reintroducing the beloved hardtail with updated geometry and technical changes.

Despite the changes, the Twostroke remains BMC’s do-everything machine, from winning XC races to pedaling around the world.

BMC Twostroke 01

One significant change BMC made for the Twostroke 01 was to its geometry. The new Twostroke features a 10mm increase in reach across sizes and a slightly lower standover height. Its seat tube angle is now a touch steeper, and the head tube now sits at 66°.

BMC designed the Twostroke 01 around a 110mm fork, but it accommodates 100-120mm of travel.

“We refined the geometry and tube profiles to maximize power transfer while adding just enough compliance for rider comfort,” Stefan Christ, Head of R&D, said. “So every watt goes forward, and the rider can stay strong all the way to the finish.”

In true XC fashion, the Twostroke 01 comes with a standard seatpost. BMC says its D-shaped post adds deflection for additional ride comfort, but the bike is still dropper-post compatible! BMC already offers a D-shape-to-round seat post adapter, which consists of an insert and a specific seat post collar. We’re not sure if that is the exact model used here, but it should be the same idea.

This means there are cable ports, including one for a dropper cable. BMC refined the routing with fully integrated cable paths to make installation easier. They’ve also relocated the cable ports, placing the opening at the head tube.

The Twostroke 01 is also now UDH compatible and utilizes SRAM’s direct mount derailleurs. The drivetrain works off a 55mm chainline and can accommodate 26-38T chainrings. BMC continues to focus on lightweight XC performance and uses a 160mm post mount standard on the Twostroke.

We don’t know much about the Twostroke 01 yet. BMC only lists a “GX AXS 1×12” in the description and the price: $6,199. However, looking at the photos can give us some hints.

  • Rock Shox SID fork
  • Vittoria Mezcal tires
  • SRAM Motive brakes
  • SRAM GX AXS drivetrain

But, you can also head to us.bmc-switzerland.com for all the details.

This all-purpose steed blends mountain bike capability with gravel bike versatility. It features mixed wheel sizes (29″ front, 27.5″ rear) to lower the center of gravity and improve handling when fully loaded.

The Unity’s geometry has been specifically tuned for riding under heavy loads. Kona adjusted fork offset and handling characteristics to maintain predictable steering even when packed for extended trips.

Check out the movie below and see Unity doing some real-time adventuring.

I’d say one of Unity’s standout features is its custom frame-mounted front rack. It bolts directly to the frame, eliminating the handling issues typically associated with front-loaded cargo.

Component-wise, Unity prioritizes durability and performance while under load. The burly Shimano XT Linkglide 11-speed drivetrain provides smooth shifting even when the bike is heavily weighted. And the low 28T steel chainring will help the rider when things get steep (or just pedaling a 70lb bike anywhere).

Tektro’s 4-piston brakes with oversized 203mm rotors will provide ample stopping power, even when descending while fully loaded with heavy cargo.

The Unity accommodates dropper posts with 170-200mm travel. This helps to ensure riders don’t sacrifice technical descending ability for cargo capacity. Kona’s Unity rolls on WTB’s durable wheelset that sports DT 370 hubs with upgraded engagement.

2026 apidura expedition series bikepacking frame bags shown on a gravel bike.

Apidura has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its Expedition Series bikepacking bags, marking the first major design revision since the company introduced welded waterproof construction to the bikepacking market in 2016.

2026 apidura expedition series bikepacking frame bags on a bike being ridden through the forest.

The redesign focused on three key features, listed here with highlights as to how they accomplished them:

  • Stability
    • Integrated attachment systems w/ no unnecessary hardware
    • Packs are shaped and sized to fit more bike sizes & modern geometries
  • Waterproofness
    • Full seam-welded construction
    • Three-layer fabric
    • Roll-top closures (where appropriate)
  • Durability
    • Reinforcements in high-wear areas
    • Internal structures to reduce flex & stress
    • Durable materials are designed to be repaired

They did all of that while maintaining an additional focus on simplicity and light weight, making them enjoyable to use. And they look good, too.

closeup of computer mounts on 2026 apidura expedition series handlebar bags.

The centerpiece of the redesign is the Expedition Handlebar System, which eliminates traditional clamps in favor of BarSpace Modules that position the pack away from the handlebars while maintaining structural integrity through stability cords and tension straps. You can add separate (optional) mesh or roll-top packs to the front of it for more storage, both of which quickly detach and can be worn via shoulder straps.

closeup of 2026 apidura expedition series bikepacking frame bags.

The system weighs 436-448g depending on capacity (9L or 14L) and includes dedicated GPS cycling computer (Garmin & Wahoo) and accessory (lights, action cams, etc.) mounts. These two (optional) three-prong mounts (think GoPro feet) make it easy to use an entire universe of 3rd party mounts using that system, and they’re actually built into the bag, so you don’t need to worry about finding room on your bars for them.

Pricing starts at $228 for the 9L variant, positioning it competitively against similar systems from Miss Grape and Tailfin that range from $218-345.

closeup of 2026 apidura expedition series bikepacking frame bags.

The collection also has redesigned frame and saddle packs with enhanced stability features.

Saddle packs now have a stability channel system with silicone grip strips and a Hypalon cradle that compresses contents toward the pack’s base.

Bend, Oregon’s bikepacking aficionados, Old Man Mountain (OMM), just released their first handlebar cradle. The new Manzanita Cradle was developed in partnership with Salsa Cycles to continue the success of Salsa’s popular Anything Cradle.

This bracket-mounted system is compatible with all types of riding styles, ranging from technical off-road adventures to smoother gravel routes. The Manzanita utilizes a hook-and-loop attachment system, where bags hang from corner hooks, like a jacket on a coat rack. This creates a secure connection without the need for complicated hardware. Easy, secure, and silent.

Once the bag hooks into place, riders can easily secure it with compression straps that route through specially designed holes in the front stretch pocket.

This means you can tighten down your gear without losing access to the most convenient storage space on the bag. The process eliminates the usual struggle of trying to manage loose bags while securing straps.

The cradle sports six M5 mounting points along its arms. This allows you to attach lights, bike computers, phones, GPS trackers, or water bottles directly to the cradle, keeping your handlebars from cluttering up.

This way, the rider can also preserve their grip positions. Plus, it creates a cleaner setup overall. All of this can make a real difference on longer rides where hand comfort matters.

Manzanita Cradle Retail & Detail

Retail: $110 – $240

  • Mounting hooks on the cradle and simple loops on the bags make mounting your bag easy and quick. So easy it can even be done one-handed.
  • Quick stash, stretch pockets provide easy access to snacks, and essentials you need while riding.
  • Six accessory mounting points on the top of the cradle provide plenty of room for computers, lights, and other accessories.
  • Dual bolt handlebar clamps provide ample grip to prevent the cradle from slipping, rotating, even the roughest trails.
  • Handlebar mounts protect the brake and shift housing to maintain smooth functionality.
  • Angle adjustability makes tire clearance on small bikes a breeze while maintaining an ideal mounting angle.
  • Waterproof fabrics and roll top closures keep your gear safe and protected in harsh weather and stream crossings.
  • Air purge valves make it easy to securely compress your gear to save space and stabilize your load.
  • 9L Top Load bag and 11L Side Load bag options for refined fit on every bike.

The new Manzanita Handlebar Cradle comes in two different bag options: an 11-liter side-loading bag designed for flat handlebars, and a 9-liter top-loading version.

Both bags share the same features and mounting system, with the main difference being where/how you access your gear. The combination gives riders a straightforward way to carry essentials up front while keeping their handlebars clear for comfortable riding.

If you didn’t already know, Otso CyclesFenrir Ti is a titanium bikepacking frame designed to handle extended backcountry adventures. It’s extremely versatile, offering riders multiple setup configurations, including rigid or suspension forks and drop or flat handlebars. Well, today, Otso launches the next generation of the Fenrir Ti.

If you were a fan of the previous version, rest assured: Osto tells us that it’s essentially the same bike, just improved to accommodate more drivetrain options and update the look a bit. Let’s take a look.

Setup Options

The Fenrir Ti is a bike that can be built with drop bars to crush some gravel or set up with a flat mountain bike handlebar for a more rugged off-road experience. With drop bars, Ostso says the Fenrir Ti “rides like an extra-capable gravel bike.” Otso recommends a short 50mm stem for drop bars to accommodate the frame’s longer reach measurement. With a flat bar, Otso says it “rides like a 90s XC bike. It’s fun and lively, yet efficient and Capable with a capital C.”

Like the previous version, you can also pick your fork preference. It comes with a rigid carbon Lithic Mountain fork, but is compatible with suspension forks with up to 120mm of travel. The rigid fork gives you extra mounting options, with three-pack braze-ons on the fork legs.

The Fenrir Ti’s frame can accommodate tires up to 29″ x 2.6″ or 27.5″ x 2.8″, and it includes multiple mounting points on the downtube, seat tube, and rear triangle for bags and racks to carry gear on multi-day adventures. Otso conveniently lists compatible racks and frame bag dimensions on its website, so you don’t have to guess or figure it out yourself.

One thing Otso claims makes the Fenrir Ti a great bikepacking rig is its stability when fully loaded with gear. Instability while fully laden is a common problem area for many bikes, but the forgiving Ti frame and bikepacking-oriented geometry are intended to keep that from being an issue.

The Frame Details

The Fenrir Ti’s frame is built using 3Al/2.5V B338 grade 9 titanium, which brings the large-sized frame weight down to 1,923 grams, about 30% lighter than the steel Fenrir. At the same time, the titanium tubing provides a smooth ride, durability, and timeless elegance — it really does look good.

It features practical geometry with a 68° head tube angle and 75° seat tube angle. Other measurements worth noting are 445mm chainstays across all sizes, along with 68mm of bottom-bracket drop for stability. Reach measurements are on the conservative side, which is in line with the bike’s intended use, with 428mm on size large. The Fenrir Ti is offered in four frame sizes, S to XL, and is claimed to fit riders between 5’3″ and 6’6″.

UDH Dropout

The latest generation Fenrir Ti adds 3D-printed titanium UDH rear dropouts, making it compatible with all modern drivetrain systems. The previous Tuning Chip dropout wasn’t compatible with UDH drivetrains, so this update opens up more component options. The move to a UDH dropout does away with the Otso’s hallmark Tuning Chip, however, so the frame does not offer the rear center/wheelbase length adjustability of its predecessor. Fenrir Ti frames with the Tuning Chip are still available from Otso and are currently on sale.

As mentioned previously, the Fenrir Ti comes with a carbon Lithic Mountain Fork that includes gear mounting points and an adjustable rake system. It’s also compatible with internally routed dropper posts, if that’s your preference. Otso’s custom bike builder lets you choose everything from handlebar type and wheel size to drivetrain components and anodized color accents. This allows riders to tailor the build to their specific riding style, adventure needs, and personal aesthetic.

And let’s not forget that the Fenrir Ti also gets updated graphics, a handsome bead-blasted frame finish, and polished logos.

The Fenrir Ti is available as a frame for $3,450 USD. And as a complete base build for $5,200 USD. You can go to Otso’s website and visit their Custom Bike Builder by hitting the link below, or visit one of Otso’s growing network of dealers.
