Today, Colorado’s Wheels Manufacturing launches a creative new Hootin’ Hauler Starter Kit – just in time for the caked-on mud of Unbound this weekend. The kit is a low-profile modular bolt-on accessory platform that tucks in under a water bottle cage. It mounts to the existing bosses under your water bottle, and can be as an attachment base for tools, storage, or any other trail-side problem-solving that needs to be done.

The Hootin Hauler is being debuted at the 2026 Unbound Gravel race to honor Unbound’s 20th year. At only $15, the starter kit includes the base attachment mount and a Trail Scraper tool. A tool that’s designed for clearing mud and debris from jockey wheels, brake calipers, chainrings, and tires.

What makes the Hootin Hauler different is its open-source approach to bike accessories.

The base serves as a foundation for a library of free, downloadable 3D-printable attachments. This allows riders to customize, modify, or create from scratch – whatever you need.

Cyclists can print exactly what they need for their specific riding style or conditions. Whether that’s carrying gear, mounting tools, or other items used for problems they encounter on the trail?

The platform encourages community involvement, with creators and riders worldwide already developing additional accessories for the system. Since the tool is launching at the 2026 Unbound Gravel, 5000 participants will receive starter kits in their race bags.

Gravel racing is hard both mentally and physically, but it’s also rough on your gear. With marquee events like Unbound pushing riders and their bikes to the limit for 200 miles, your equipment, and especially your drivetrain, takes an absolute beating. Factor in unpredictable weather and surface conditions that can change from mud to dust by the minute, and the grit accumulated on your chain, cassette, and chainring(s) can massively impact your drivetrain’s efficiency on race day. 

For racers at the pointy end of the field, losing watts to a dirty chain or stopping to lube it mid-race can both negatively impact your results. If you stop, you can lose precious time, get dropped by the group, or potentially see your name slide down the results sheet. Which is why we occasionally see racers attempting to lube their (or sometimes other riders’) drivetrains while riding — or coming up with their own systems to do it on the fly.

We just learned that our friends at Faction Bike Studio have teamed up with Andrew L’Esperance to create a brand-new, hands-free, electronic chain lubrication system. Here’s a sneak peek.

From a DIY Concept to a Functional Prototype

Finishing in the top 10 overall in the 2025 Life Time Grand Prix, Andrew L’Esperance appreciates the efficiency of a well-lubricated drivetrain. In fact, the Canadian rider was spotted using his own on-bike lubrication technique at Unbound last year. L’Esperance zip-tied a syringe of chain lube to his seat tube, which he could manually press to apply lube to his chain on the fly.

Now, Faction Bike Studio and L’Esperance have “turned that original concept into a fully integrated electronic chain lube dripper system purpose-built for gravel racing.” With the push of a button, the system reportedly delivers a metered amount of lubricant to hit the full chain while pedaling at ~75 rpm. Check out the short video below to see it in action.

The system includes a lube chamber hidden discreetly in the seat tube, a handlebar-mounted remote, and a custom guide and dripper positioned above the chainring. The whole system weighs a claimed 100g.

This isn’t the first automatic on-bike chain lubricator that we’ve seen. Both the Rohloff Lubmatic and the Scottoiler Cycle S1 were variations of the concept that aimed to work similarly. Neither of those appeared to have much commercial success, however, probably due in part to the limited market for such a niche bike accessory. Still, the Faction x L’Esperance system appears to be the lightest, sleekest, and most refined version that we’ve seen thus far.

How Well Does it Work?

Saturday’s Unbound 200 will be the first real-world race test of this brand-new electronic chain lube system. There’s obviously a lot more to a successful ride through the Flint Hills than a well-lubed drivetrain, but it certainly couldn’t hurt L’Esperance’s chances. And it will undoubtedly be a true test of the system during proper race conditions. We’ll certainly be watching and are keen to see how it performs.

Yet, Freedom Coast simply wanted more control over the shape and ergonomics. Plus, they could deal with slightly higher costs that gave them the freedom to focus on more precise manufacturing tolerances. Since Freedom didn’t have to create a lever that worked for everybody, from beginner to pro racers, they focused on exactly what they thought they could improve:

Viair has been making a variety of air compressors since the late 1990s. While the majority of the brand’s products are geared toward vehicle and workshop use, Viair has been catering to the cycling market for several years now. In fact, we wrote about one of their portable compressors back in 2022, well before the recent electric mini-inflator craze took off. Of course, Viair has a portable electric mini-inflator now as well, two actually. 

The Recon Mini debuted in early 2025 and was followed up later that year by the lighter-weight Recon Mini SL with an aluminum Presta head that saves 30 grams. I’ve used quite a few different portable e-pumps, but I’ve never had the chance to use either of Viair’s. So, when I saw the Viair booth at Sea Otter, I wandered over to see what they had going on. 

Viair Clik Heads

There are lots of alt-valves on the market these days, but the Clik valve has proven to be one of the most popular. In the past year, a few brands, including Lezyne and Wolf Tooth, have begun offering their pumps with Clik-compatible heads. Now, you can add Viair to that list, as they now sell the Viair Recon Mini and Recon Mini SL with Clik heads. 

The Recon Mini Clik sells for $137 while the Recon Mini SL Clik goes for $148. If you already own a Viair Recon Mini pump with the standard Presta head, they also sell the Clik head separately for $20. The brass Clik head threads on in place of the existing Presta head, and it weighs a claimed 15 grams. Viair also sells the Clik head with a set of Clik valves for $30 and sets of Clik valves on their own for $13.

Viair On-Bike Inflator Carrying Case

While the number of electric mini-inflators has grown exponentially in the past year and a half, we haven’t really seen many solutions for carrying them on the bike. Sure, they fit easily enough in a jersey pocket, hydration vest, some saddle bags, frame bags, and various other places. But the rectangular shape may not fit into some bikes’ downtube storage compartments, saddle bags, or it can feel uncomfortable in a pocket against the body.  

There are probably many people out there who have already sorted out their mini-inflator carrying system. It’s safe to assume people have been 3D-printing brackets or figuring out other ways to strap them to their bicycles. Still, these electric gadgets aren’t waterproof, so I was pumped (ha) to see that Viair was showing a weatherproof Recon Mini carrying case at Sea Otter.

This plastic carrying case is made specifically to fit Viair’s Recon Mini pumps — the Mini and Mini SL share the same dimensions. It attaches to a frame tube or your saddle rails with a wide, stretchy rubber strap. I was told that it is sealed when closed and has passed submersion tests, so it should be able to stand up easily to rain, road spray, puddle splashes, and mud, too. 

The Viair team had several of these cases floating around the booth at Sea Otter, and they appeared to be production-ready. They have not hit the market just yet, but they say pre-orders have already been opened to retailers, the first units will be shipping at the end of May, and they should be live on the website in mid-May. The claimed weight of the prototypes is 95 grams, but production weights may vary slightly depending on the TPU density for the production run. Retail price is currently set at $34.95 for the carrier. They also plan to sell inflator and carrier bundles.

Hidden in the fog of Sea Otter product launches was the key integration of the Hammerhead Karoo cycling computer and RockShox’s Flight Attendant automated suspension control system. In retrospect, it feels like this is a feature that I would have assumed was probably already there. But trying it out for the first time last week, it legitimately changed how much I appreciated Flight Attendant, literally opening my eyes to what was really happening as I rode.

Since we first rode it, the Hammerhead Karoo has delivered great usability, a nice screen, and solid integration. Its latest third generation, after it was bought by SRAM several years back, stepped it up with great AXS connectivity too – like button customization and live battery status. Now connected to RockShox Flight Attendant suspension controls, the integration is next-level. All you need to do is an over-the-air firmware update to connect your mountain bike’s suspension.

But this is more than just showing suspension positions on your cycling computer, the new integration makes it easier than ever to change Flight Attendant settings, and to dial-in automated suspension performance to how you want your bike to ride!

Review: Why Flight Attendant is better when connected to Hammerhead!

First off, anyone who has hopped onto a bike with Flight Attendant can attest, those LEDs on top of the right fork leg like to go crazy. They flash to show you everything is working, but also to show when something is awry. But you need a pretty complex chart to decipher what all the different flashes and colors actually mean. Sure, once you study it a bit, there is logic to it all. And you’ll probably remember what they mean.

But frankly, a lot of the time I have ridden bikes with Flight Attendant, those LEDs are hidden behind the bar as I ride. Having to crane my neck to see what the automated suspension was doing seemed odd. And also, the occasional flashes as my line of sight changed, meant the flashes out of the corner of my eye were a little distracting – which can now be turned off in a new dark mode!

Now with Hammerhead integration, all the Flight Attendant information that I want to see is readily visible.

Plus, it is all customizable. This is my first setting – just 1.8km into the ride, and I’ve already changed the view to swap FA mode & heartrate for easier visibility while training.

Live updated as I rode, this integration showed me what I only really heard before as a series of electronic actuators popping on and off. Yes, Flight Attendant was really doing something no thumb-actuated remote could ever do – keeping both front & rear suspension on my bike always in the optimal mode – actually hundreds of times per hour. And after the fact, I could see exactly what it was doing. (You can display live position counts too, but I preferred to keep it simple on the bike.)

After you upload your ride, the Hammerhead app lets you nerd out on the data collected.

These two screengrabs show two similar rides (<25km, 90-100min, 700-725m of climbing) with two different setups, including some of the same sections of trails. On the left was a more XC-leaning stiffer setup with both fork and rear shock free to move through all 3 modes for maximum efficiency. On the right, a softer more Trail-like setup let Flight Attendant determine the 3 rear shock modes, but I limited fork control to just Open or Pedal for a more cushy ride. (I quickly changed Flight Attendant modes on the Karoo in under a minute.)

Both setups saw Flight Attendant change suspension modes automatically more than 3x per minute for the shock, and 1.5-3.7x per minute for the fork, depending on the control I gave it. And both help illustrate how often Flight Attendant would have the fork & shock in different modes depending on how I was riding, something virtually impossible to achieve with any mechanical remotes.

Ultimately, what Karoo + Flight Attendant integration did for me was to show me how well automated suspension controls could actually function. But also, it gave me a sense of control over a system that I frankly wasn’t very interested in a couple of weeks ago.

By putting control of RockShox’s Flight Attendant suspension automation at my fingertips, now I realize how easy it can be to tweak the way it rides. First, that was letting me tell it to exclude fork lockouts when I wanted a more plush trail riding feel. But I also used the Bias Adjustment so I can shift how Flight Attendant decides to open and close my suspension, to get a more active ride that delays a bit how quickly Flight Attendant thinks it should lock everything out.

Instead of everything happening inside a black box, with only some flashing LEDs to hint at what’s happening, now Hammerhead Karoo + RockShox Flight Attendant integration lets me visualize how automated suspension control can actually boost performance and efficiency. Unlike wireless electronic shifting and dropper remotes that don’t actually add any new operation, Flight Attendant delivers a new suspension function that simply couldn’t be done with mechanical remotes. As a geeky retro-grouch at heart, it’s crazy that these two systems talking together is all it took to show me the virtues of automated system control.

The latest Ari Shafer is an incredible gravel bike. But in spite of the downtube storage, something was missing – a way to organize tools inside of that downtube. The original, which launched in 2024, wasn’t that big to begin with. Now, there’s an even smaller option for keeping tabs on your bicycle’s tire pressure with the Outrider TL Mini.

The design is the same, using a small transmitter plate that sits inside your rim, and it still works with almost any standard Presta tubeless valve stem.

What’s new is the size – it’s smaller to fit inside more rims, and it’s just 3.7g per wheel. They say it’s recommended for symmetric rims with a 19mm internal width, or asymmetric rims with 23mm internal width.

It works up to 125psi (which is way higher than anyone is, or should be, running in a tubeless setup). Its electronics are completely sealed in epoxy, with a chemically-resistant membrane over the pressure sensor to repel liquids, so add all the tire sealant you want. It’s even compatible with tire inserts.

The wireless communication lets it talk to Garmin and Hammerhead computers (as well as most Garmin smart watches), as well as their iOS and Android apps. At launch, it’s not compatible with Wahoo.

It does more than just show real-time tire pressure, though. Features include:

The battery lasts for up to 2,000 hours of ride time, which is good because it’s not replaceable or rechargeable. But if you typically ride two hours, that’s 1,000 rides, or about three years of riding every single day. They say that’s more like 5-10 years for most riders. Soooo… it’s probably fine.

Picking a new saddle can be difficult. Prologo is hoping to make that process a bit easier, with science. Aimed at professional bike fitters, teams, and sophisticated bike shops, the new Prologo Pressure Map MyOwn system provides real-time visualization of where you’re putting pressure on the saddle.

It’s a mat that looks like a saddle cover, except it’s equipped with 64 high-sensitivity sensors, connected to a wireless control unit, and transmits data via Bluetooth to a smartphone app (iOS or Android). Users can select specific Prologo models to improve results, but they say it’s compatible with any size, shape, and brand of saddle on the market.

It measures pressure zones throughout the pedal stroke, identifying “hot spots” and helps you find the best saddle shape and width for you. Teams will use it for performance gains, but it can also be used to alleviate pain or just improve overall comfort.

And, since it’s wireless, it can be used indoors or outdoors, which lets you collect data in real-world riding rather than on a trainer. That puts it light years ahead of other saddle measurement systems which simply have you sit down on a piece of paper or gel-filled mat to measure proper saddle width.

From terrain vibrations, varying positions on flat terrain and hills, the outdoor riding data should produce much more useful feedback. Either way, the real-time data lets you quickly adjust your position, saddle angle, etc., to fine tune until it’s just right.

No word on cost, but since it’s aimed at fitters, bike shops, and teams, don’t expect it to be something you’d want to purchase on your own…

No matter what type of bike you ride, having the correct tire pressure is critical for getting the best performance from your tires and bike out on the road or trail. These days, we’ve got quite a few options when it comes to tire pressure recommendations, with numerous brands offering their versions of pressure calculators online and/or in app form. Wolf Tooth Components is among the brands helping riders take the guesswork out of tire pressure with its Tire Pressure Calculator App, launched back in 2024. 

Just a few months later, Wolf Tooth updated the Tire Pressure Calculator to version 2.0, adding more tire sizes and addressing rider requests. Now, with version 2.1, Wolf Tooth is trying to stay on top of the evolving tire market while addressing recent trends in mountain and gravel bike tires. Let’s check out the updates.

What’s New For v2.1?

The appearance and user interface of the Wolf Tooth Tire Pressure Calculator app haven’t really changed and still let you find your ideal tire pressure based on wheel size, tire width, rider weight, temperature, and other factors. Now its been fine-tuned with more options than ever to dial in your ride. These are:

MX/Mullet Option for MTB

Previously, when choosing wheel size in the Mountain (Advanced) mode, you could choose wheel size, but it did not allow you to select front and rear independently to account for mixed wheel configurations. Now, rather than defaulting to both wheels being the same size, you can choose front and rear wheel diameters separately. This small change should make it easier for the many riders on mullet/MX/mixed-wheel mountain bikes to dial in their tire optimal pressures.

Radial Tire Casing Option for MTB

Schwalbe put the mountain bike tire market on notice a couple of years ago when it debuted its Radial casing tires. The enhanced traction from the radial casing construction was and is notable, as are the counterintuitively higher pressures that the tires require to perform at their best. Adding pressure to a tire to increase grip is confusing at first, so this could be helpful for folks as they try out radial tires.

Given the performance and high praise that Schwalbe’s Radial tires have received, it also seems very likely that we’ll be seeing more MTB tire brands coming out with their own radial casing tires. We’ve already seen some from Vee Tire Co., and we expect more brands to follow suit. Adding the Radial option seems like a good move by Wolf Tooth that will hopefully smooth the transition.

32” Tire Option for Gravel and MTB

Based on all the hype surrounding the 32” wheel size, Wolf Tooth is getting ahead of the curve and including 32” as a wheel diameter in the Advanced modes for both Gravel and Mountain tires. While this is likely to only benefit a select few early adopters of the larger hoops at first, it will surely become more useful as industry and rider acceptance (potentially) grow in the coming years.

Casing Width Units Options for Gravel

Since some modern gravel tires are just mountain bike tires with widths measured in inches, Wolf Tooth added the option to use inches for the width measurement on the Basic and Advanced Gravel modes. Now, you can choose between width in millimeters or width in inches, depending on the tires in question.

Up to 3.3” Width for MTB Tires

The plus-sized tire phenomenon came and went, but there are still some mid-fat tires out there. Wolf Tooth has increased its mountain bike tire widths to go all the way up to 3.3” wide for those who might still be hanging on to the hope that 27.5”+ and 29”+ could make a comeback.
