Be it road miles, gravel cut-throughs, dusty farm roads, or after-work loops that turn into “where does this go?” situations. The new Lazer Blade KinetiCore is a midrange helmet that punches above its weight and weighs less than more expensive designs. The real kicker…it’s only $99.

What is it? Lazer Blade KinetiCore

The Lazer Blade KinetiCore isn’t trying to be a featherweight WorldTour lid, a full aero TT missile, or a chunky adventure helmet. It sits in the middle: sleek enough for the road crowd, relaxed enough for gravel. 

It has a clean, streamlined shape with Lazer dual-shell construction. It’s the same construction that you’ll see on the more popular helmets in the Lazer lineup. Visually, it gives the helmet a pronounced line where the two shells meet, breaking up the shape and giving it a little more character than the usual smooth commuter blob.

Understated & Classic 

The Blade looks modern without screaming “race day only,” or “I take myself too seriously,” which is probably the point. Lazer says the helmet is designed for riders splitting time between quiet roads and dusty paths, and the shape backs that up. It should look at home with bibs and a fast road bike, but not completely out of place with a handlebar bag, tan walls, and some Lemmy-style super-short cut-off jean shorts.

Inside, Lazer uses soft, dense padding aimed at long-ride comfort. The fit is handled by the brand’s Advanced TurnSys system, which allows both horizontal and vertical adjustment. It’s super easy to use with or without gloves and has a satisfyingly deep click. 

There’s also a new strap divider designed to keep the straps sitting clean and consistent. Small thing? Absolutely. But anyone who has spent a ride fiddling with straps that creep toward their ears knows it matters.

KinetiCore Comes Built In

The big tech story is Lazer’s KinetiCore protection system on a $99 do-it-all helmet. For those who are new to Lazer and KinetiCore, let me catch you up. Instead of adding a separate slip-plane liner, KinetiCore is built directly into the helmet structure using internal crumple zones designed to help redirect impact energy away from the head. The crumple zones are super easy to see on the inside of the helmet. 

That integrated approach is central to Lazer’s current helmet lineup. The brand says it reduces material use, helps keep weight down, and improves ventilation compared to designs that rely on extra internal layers.

For the Blade KinetiCore, the claimed weight is 250g for a medium, and ours came in at 245g, 5 g under. That puts it in the pointy-end for an all-road helmet, especially at this price point. It’s light enough that it shouldn’t feel like a budget lid, but not so gram-obsessed that it forgets what most riders actually need: comfort and protection.

Eyewear Docking and LED Compatibility

Lazer also added integrated eyewear docking, something that seems to have been an afterthought on more modern helmets. The Blade KinetiCore is also compatible with Lazer’s Universal LED, which mounts to the rear of the helmet using the built-in Direct Mount.

Seven Colors, Three Sizes

The Blade KinetiCore comes in S, M, and L sizing and seven colors: Flash Orange, Matte Black, Matte Clay, Matte Cobalt Blue, Matte Deep Grey, Matte Sage Green, and White (tested).

That color spread is pretty solid. Flash Orange for the “please see me” crowd, Matte Black for the “I own five black helmets already” crowd, and Matte Sage Green/Matte Clay for riders whose bike, kit, and cell phone case all match. I, however, chose white because, like black, it matches everything, and like most roadies, it matches my shoes.

Ride Impressions: Lazer Blade KinetiCore

As a former bike shop employee, I get excited to see helmets that look nice and are affordable. Because nothing is worse than selling a bike and having the customer put off by either the style or the price of something thats pretty much mandatory for what they’re purchasing.

The new Lazer Blade walks the line of all-around and gravel lid pretty well. I can firmly say that it doesn’t fit into one camp; it’s for sure not an aero helmet, and thats a good thing. It’s a solid all-rounder. Coming from mostly wearing performance headwear, during the season, checking out the Lazer Blade was a nice change of pace. 

The fit is excellent, and I wear a medium, just like my Lazer Z1. The biggest difference I noticed compared to my other Lazer lids was the new strap divider. It feels similar to the Specialized Evade 4 that we just reviewed. They fit over my ears nicely and stayed very close to the face, but not uncomfortably.

But Not Everything

Though the new Lazer Blade offers a ton of value for the price, some aspects left me wanting. The first thing I noticed when switching from my Lazer Z1 was the middle line airflow. The center of the Blade is slightly underserved for ventilation. There are ample vents, but none seem to channel to the middle of the head. It’s not uncomfortable, but it’s notable when switching from a helmet with better-designed ventilation.

Sweat retention was another issue. The padding, though comfortable, didn’t hold sweat as well as the Z1’s thicker, more absorbent padding. This again wasn’t a huge issue, but it can be when you look down at your head unit, and it’s like the dam broke.

However, the good impressions outweigh the little nitpicks. After a month in the Laser Blade, I like it. I reach for it when I’m going out on mountain bike rides or gravel rides. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and I can easily put a rain cap under it when the weather is foul. Bonus: it matches all of my kits.

Take Away

That price is probably the biggest win here. Helmets have gotten expensive fast, especially once you start adding rotational-impact tech, wind tunnel testing, and better ventilation. The Blade KinetiCore keeps the feature list practical and the price under control.

No, it’s not the top-tier race helmet in Lazer’s lineup. That’s not the job. The Blade KinetiCore feels more like the helmet you grab for everything: road rides, gravel spins, travel bikes, first events, rides with the kids, or the daily loop. 

For $99.99, that’s a pretty complete package.

Twiceme’s NFC-based digital safety technology has been around for a few years now. The Swedish safety brand is known for its scannable NFC chips, which store a user’s medical information, used in both jobsite safety equipment and some skiing, climbing, and cycling helmets. In addition to medical ID, Twiceme also offers additional features, including location sharing, immobility alerts, and emergency services notifications when used with the free Twiceme app.

In the cycling world, we’ve seen Twiceme integrated most frequently into numerous models of POC road/gravel and mountain bike helmets. Now, Twiceme is expanding its reach in the bike market, with the announcement of integration into four of Smith’s popular helmets. The Smith Triad and Trace road/gravel models, along with the Payroll and Forefront 2 mountain bike helmets, are now available with the Twiceme at no additional cost.

Out with Aleck, In with Twiceme

Interestingly, all of these Smith helmet models were previously available in the same black/grey topo colorway with an Aleck crash sensor. The Aleck (formerly Tocsen) crash sensor was originally a stick-on accessory that was modified to fit into the dial of the adjustment harness on the aforementioned Smith helmets. This sensor was intended to alert your emergency contacts in the event of a crash. 

For whatever reason, Aleck’s crash sensors no longer appear to be in production, and they are not an option when purchasing any Smith helmets. In its place, quite literally, Smith is now offering all of these helmets with the Twiceme digital safety system.

Twiceme Features

Twiceme uses non-battery hardware in the form of a scannable NFC (Near Field Communication) chip. This chip can be integrated directly into a bike helmet or other gear, or, in the case of the Smith helmets, a disc built into the dial of the helmet’s fit adjustment system. 

Medical ID is the main feature of the Twiceme system, and users can upload personal medical information — allergies, conditions, medications, and emergency contacts — through the Twiceme app. If necessary, this information can be accessed by first responders or bystanders by hovering a smartphone over the Twiceme symbol, in this case, the rear adjustment dial. 

The other features of Twiceme include:

  • Share Location allows users to select who can see their real-time location, helping them keep track of their family, teams, or groups.
  • Emergency Services enables users to manually trigger emergency notifications, utilizing GPS capabilities to pinpoint their last known location for a rapid response.
  • Get Back Timer allows users to set expected return times and automatically alerts designated contacts if the return is delayed.
  • Immobility Alert detects prolonged immobility, which could indicate someone is incapacitated, and triggers an emergency alert if the user does not respond to a mobile notification.

Smith x Twiceme Helmets: Models, Pricing, and Availability

Twiceme Digital Safety technology is currently being offered on four of Smith’s helmet models, all of which come in the Matte Black / Topo colorway only. These include the road/gravel-oriented Trace Mips and Triad Mips, as well as the Payroll Mips and Forefront 2 Mips (not to be confused with the latest Forefront 3). All of these models are currently priced the same as their standard counterparts without Twiceme.

Full-cut, over-the-ear, or ¾? It doesn’t seem like the industry has really settled on what to call extended-coverage helmets like the new Troy Lee Designs Stage Stunt. Regardless of what we call this style of helmet, they’ve slowly grown in popularity and number in the past few years, and TLD is adding another model to the list of options. This new helmet combines TLD’s signature looks in a lightweight ¾-shell design for riders seeking enhanced coverage without a chinbar. 

Troy Lee Designs Stage Stunt Details

The TLD Stage full-face helmet is among the lightest and best-ventilated dedicated full-face models on the market and has been popular with enduro, all-mountain, and aggressive trail riders for a few years now. With the new Stage Stunt, it appears that TLD essentially took the Stage and removed the chinbar, a design which should enhance airflow and reduce weight while providing increased head coverage.

The ¾ shell offers significantly more coverage than a half-shell, including more at the back of the head and extending down over the ears and covering part of the upper jaw, as well. The helmet otherwise looks strikingly similar to the Stage, with a familiar vent layout and signature Troy Lee Designs styling. 

The Stage Stunt has a fairly traditional in-mold construction with a lightweight, fiber-reinforced polycarbonate shell paired with dual-density EPS intended to help manage forces from both high- and low-speed impacts. For rotational impact protection, TLD chose the new Mips Integra Fuse system. This system integrates the low-friction layer by fusing it directly to the EPS inside the helmet shell. This design is intended to be very low-profile and noise-free without any impact on ventilation.

The Stage Stunt uses a convenient Fidlock magnetic buckle for one-handed operation. TLD includes two thicknesses of Dri-lex cheek pads and neck rolls, with three positions of vertical adjustment to optimize the helmet’s fit and stability. The three-position visor is, not surprisingly, goggle compatible. To keep things cool, 9 intake ports and 13 exhaust vents are designed to provide maximum airflow.

The Stage Stunt weighs in at a claimed 550 grams (size not specified), making it one of the lightest helmets of its type. It comes in three sizes, XS/SM (54-56cm), MD/LG (57-59cm), and XL/XXL (60-63cm).

There was a stretch where every aero helmet launch felt like an arms race. Every manufacturer’s was “the best“. The most space-age, the most vents shaped by CFD, the most wind tunnel data. Proposed Space Balls – The Helmet designs reminiscent of “Darth Helmet” pummel from the PowerPoint pitch. Because, “It doesn’t matter what you look like, as long as it’s fast, right?

Well, yes and no.

For most cyclists, the trade-offs start to lean towards the comfort side, the hotter the race is. For me, not looking like a total space cadet is a mega-bonus. Given that the bulk of the cycling season takes place in hot weather, heat management and head cooling are big deals for many of us riders. All the aero advantages start to fade away when your head’s too hot to process incoming race stimuli.

That’s where Specialized landed with its all-new Evade 4. It’s nearly the same silhouette, slightly heavier (v3 at 272g vs. v4 at 329g, in size Medium), but with some additional vents that make it a claimed 2.6% cooler overall. 

Most racers would trade those 57g for better airflow any day. And after spending a lot of time in the new Evade 4, I’m 100% fine with it, too.

To me, “the new Evade 4 looks more like a Specialized helmet than the very recognizable Evade 3.”

Why? The forehead ‘MouthPort’ vents. It’s something I’ve come to associate with Specialized since the early days of the Prevail. And it’s stuck with me. 

But the Evade 4 feels different. Not because it’s radically reshaped or dramatically faster. But because Specialized seems more interested in refining the experience than in just chasing another microscopic aero gain. It’s much like what we’re seeing on the road bike engineering side. Bikes aren’t radically changing. They are getting incrementally better and more comfortable. Less wasted ‘fast looking‘ aerofoil material and performative aero gains – more comfort.

The headline update this time around is improved cooling, better fit, and overall comfort. Yeah, it keeps the same swoopy fast silhouette that’s made the Evade one of the more recognizable helmets in the peloton for the better part of a decade. But it’s making that helmet (one that I’ve worn for years) slightly more tolerable on the days you want the aero benefit but hate the heat penalty. Essentially, making the Evade a much better all-rounder. 

If It Ain’t Broke

Since its launch back in 2013, the Evade has become one of those helmets that quietly became the default choice for a huge chunk of fast riders (and riders looking to be fast). WorldTour sprinters, local crit kings & queens, gravel pros, and even mountain bike racers. I see Evades everywhere. They’ve historically managed to strike a pretty rare balance between aerodynamics, ventilation, and actually looking fairly normal on a human head.

If you go too far with aero shaping, the helmet becomes hot, awkward, or visually ridiculous.

Open up the ventilation too much, and you lose the speed advantage people are buying it for in the first place.

So instead of blowing the whole thing up, Specialized simply refined the Evade 4.

More Airflow

The biggest focus for the Evade 4 is airflow.

Specialized says the new helmet runs cooler than the previous version, largely thanks to revised vent shaping, a more open rear exhaust area, and the return of the front “MouthPort” vent that Specialized helmet riders will recognize immediately.

The shell shape also looks a bit more compact than the Evade 3’s. Slightly shorter overall, and closer to the head, and designed to sit more naturally on the head instead of towering over it like some aero lids.

More importantly, Specialized also widened the internal shape.

That matters because the Evade 3 (while really fast) could feel pretty cramped around the temples for certain riders. Our Editor-in-Chief Zach had a very hard time getting the Evade 3 to work for his head shape, as did many other riders. 

The new fit appears noticeably more forgiving without losing the close, race-oriented feel that makes the Evade what it is.

In other words: still aero, just less likely to make your forehead feel like it’s in a vise halfway through a July climb.

Evade 4 Aero Gains?

What’s interesting about the Evade 4 is what Specialized isn’t saying.

There’s no dramatic “fastest helmet ever made” messaging (they love that phrase, btw). No huge watt savings claim. No revolutionary new shape. It was already a solid design. 

But Yes, Cooling Gains!

That’s probably because modern aero helmets are reaching the same point aero road bikes hit a few years ago: the easy gains are gone, now it’s making the system more comfortable while supplying those same free Watts. 

Especially with updated UCI regulations limiting some of the more extreme helmet designs, manufacturers are increasingly working within smaller margins. Once you have a genuinely fast helmet, there’s only so much left to squeeze out before usability starts to suffer.

So, that’s why Specialized was able to put so much focus on keeping racers’ heads cooler.

BOA, MIPS, and the Little Stuff

The Evade 4 also gets a handful of quieter updates that collectively make the helmet feel more polished.

Specialized moved to Boa’s FS2 fit system, which gives the rear retention setup a slightly cleaner and lower-profile feel. Inside, the updated MIPS Air Node Pro system is designed to improve airflow and reduce hot spots while still keeping the helmet light and compact, and still safe in a non-linear crash.

None of those changes is individually groundbreaking. But together they point toward something pretty clear:

The goal here was making the helmet disappear once it’s on your head.

Slightly Heavier, Probably Doesn’t Matter

The Evade 4 does gain quite a bit of weight compared to the outgoing version, though not enough for most riders to notice outside a spec sheet. And realistically, nobody buys an Evade because it’s the lightest helmet on the wall.

They buy it because it’s one of the few aero helmets that works well across almost every kind of riding. Fast road rides, racing, gravel events, long summer training days, the Evade has always been versatile in a category that often isn’t.

The new one looks like it continues that trend.

Review: Fit & Ride Impressions

The biggest thing I noticed immediately with the Evade 4 wasn’t aero, it was comfort. Specialized clearly opened this helmet up compared to the Evade 3, and the difference is noticeable the second you get moving. 

The addition of the MouthPort really works. You can feel air being pulled through the helmet once speeds pick up, especially on longer road climbs or hot gravel sections, where aero helmets usually start to feel a little stuffy.

Overall, ventilation feels significantly improved without losing that “fast helmet” sensation the Evade has always had.

It still feels sleek and efficient in the wind, but less claustrophobic than previous versions. The styling also stays pretty subdued, which I appreciate. The colorways offered don’t go too overboard branding-wise. Specialized didn’t try to make it look futuristic or overly aggressive. It still looks like an Evade, just cleaned up and slightly more refined.

The new MIPS Air Node pads are a nice addition, too. Honestly, the fit of the helmet itself is dialed enough that I didn’t notice them much while riding, which is probably the point. Nothing moved around, nothing created pressure points. And after a while, the helmet just sort of disappeared on my head.

Additionally, the sunglasses retention actually works. This seemingly trivial piece of convenience seems to have been designed out of most aero helmets. Recently, it’s making a resurgence, and I love to see it.

Evade 4 – In The Races

You can see riders in the Giro d’Italia sporting them. The same goes for the Specialized Factory Off-Road team at Nove Mesto for the MTB World Cup over the weekend. Plus, I’m gonna bet Keegan and crew will be wearing them at Unbound in another week.

My own experience has stayed surprisingly consistent regardless of discipline.

Yeah, when it gets super rainy (especially if you’re on gravel), the top vent can be an “insert gravel here” port. But, in the end, it’s not that bad; you just might have to itch some gravel out of your mop after the ride. 

But all in all, the Evade 4 offers excellent cooling performance, a comfortable fit, and that unmistakable “fast” feel that aero helmets tend to deliver once speeds rise.

Overall, the Specialized Evade 4 helmet feels like an excellent successor to the Evade 3. It’s more comfortable, cooler, and a little easier to live with day-to-day without losing what made the Evade popular in the first place.

The only real downside is the slight price bump, which feels a bit annoying given how expensive premium helmets already are.

Refinement Over Reinvention

That might actually be the bigger story here.

For the second generation in a row, Specialized isn’t trying to reinvent what an aero road helmet is supposed to be. Instead, they’re refining an already successful design and focusing on the parts riders actually notice after many hours in the saddle.

At this point, most riders probably benefit more from a helmet that stays cool, fits properly, and disappears on long rides than one that claims another fractional watt advantage in perfect wind tunnel conditions.

That’s almost a 15% bump over the outgoing $299 Evade 3 (which is actually on sale for $229 right now, too), creating an interesting situation where the older helmet remains a very strong option, especially once sale pricing kicks in.

Still, for riders wanting the latest version of one of the defining aero helmets of the modern era, the new Specialized S-Works Evade 4 looks less like a reinvention, and more like a very polished evolution of an already proven formula.

We caught a glimpse of Sweet Protection’s new Deckard MTB Goggles at Sea Otter, and now they’ve officially hit the market. The Deckard is the brand’s top-tier MTB goggle built for aggressive enduro, bike park, and downhill riding. According to Sweet Protection, these goggles were designed to help you see clearly when the world is moving fast around you.

Not surprisingly, they’ve been designed to pair seamlessly with Sweet Protection’s Fixer 2Vi MIPS and Strayer 2Vi MIPS full face helmets. Those helmets recently received the top rankings from the Virginia Tech Helmet Test Lab for full face models. Now, you can pair them with the Deckard MTB goggles for a precise and stable fit and a wide field of view.

Sweet says they designed the goggle’s shape, outriggers, and strap to line up perfectly with their full-face helmet models. This creates a goggle and helmet system, of sorts, which eliminates any gaps or pressure points when paired together. And when fit, comfort, and stability combine, you can dedicate all of your focus on what’s coming down the trail. If you have another brand of helmet, we’re willing to bet they’ll probably work with that, too, even if the fit isn’t quite as precise.

The Deckard frame is made of durable TPU with an injected lens panel. Triple-layer face foam ensures on-the-face comfort, while open mesh ventilation ports promote airflow while keeping dust and debris at bay. The strap is connected to outriggers, which optimize the goggle’s position in the opening of the helmet and on your face. 

The Deckard MTB goggles come equipped with a 2.8mm sculpted cylindrical lens. The current lens options appear to be clear or the mirrored RIG Reflect. RIG is what Sweet Protection calls its contrast-enhancing lens technology. The RIG Topaz lens (orange reflective coating) comes standard on the RIG Reflect version of the goggles, and Sweet also sells a RIG Bixbite lens, which has more of a purple reflective coating. For those who ride in sloppy conditions, the Deckard is tear-off ready, too.

The Sweet Protection Deckard comes in three versions. The standard Deckard MTB Goggle comes with a black frame, black strap, and clear lens, and retails for $160. The Emil Johansson Signature model has a white frame, a white strap w/Emil’s graphic, a clear lens, and a $170 price tag. The Deckard RIG Reflect has a white frame and a white strap and comes with the RIG Topaz lens for $180.

There was no shortage of cool new bikes, components, and other gear to see at Sea Otter, but brand-new mountain bike helmets were few and far between. While there weren’t lots of MTB helmet treasures to find, I still came across a small handful of helmets that are just hitting the market. Smith’s new Pilot MTB helmet is a new budget-friendly offering, blending modern styling with a $95 price tag. For the little rippers, Smith’s new Sidekick Jr. Mips brings updated style and protective features to a kids’ helmet for under $100, too.

Additionally, Bell had the new lightweight full-face Full Air Mips as well as the extra-coverage 3QTR Air Mips on hand to check out. Of course, Specialized had the brand new Ambush 3 out on display in its booth, but we already wrote about that new model when it launched last week, just before the show. And we did get a few sneak peeks at other helmets we can’t talk about quite yet, but that are coming soon…

Smith Pilot MTB: $95

Smith quietly snuck the new Pilot MTB helmet onto its website a few weeks ago, but it didn’t officially launch until Sea Otter. The Pilot is the brand’s new entry-level mountain bike half shell, and a significant step up in coverage, features, and, most importantly, aesthetics, from the old Convoy model. 

Smith did a good job of styling the Pilot’s shell to be more consistent with the design language of some of its more expensive models. In fact, it looks like a bit of a cross between the Forefront 3 and the Payroll. They also increased the coverage of the in-mold shell over the temples and occipital lobe to better align with modern standards.

Inside, Smith included a Mips Evolve Core rotational impact protection system and a “performance comfort liner”, while the adjustable fit system provides a personalized fit. While the visor is not adjustable, Smith did add eyewear storage channels on the front of the helmet to stash glasses when not in use. And there are 13 vents to promote airflow while riding. 

The Pilot MTB comes in five sizes, claimed to fit heads between 48 and 65cm. The claimed weight of a size medium is just 370 grams. It is currently offered in five colors: Matte Black, Matte White, Matte Gravy, Matte Flint, and Matte Aura. It is available now at Smith retailers and through the brand’s website.

Smith Sidekick Jr. Mips: $95

Smith also had its new Sidekick Jr. kids’ bike helmet on display. This new model brings the styling and protective features similar to the adult models to a lid made for the youngest riders. In fact, it looks kinda like the Pilot MTB helmet above, just in a smaller package for kids’ heads. Now, the kids can look a little more like mommy and/or daddy while out on rides.

The Sidekick Jr. has an in-mold EPS and polycarbonate shell construction with extended coverage for the back of the head, like most of our modern adult half-shell helmets. Smith included a MIPS liner for rotational impact protection, and it has an adjustable fit system to ensure that it’s snug on the head. It has an integrated, non-adjustable visor, and the center rear vent is compatible with the rechargeable Transit Light (sold separately).

The Sidekick Jr. Mips is available in two sizes: Youth XS (48-52cm, age range: 4-8) and Youth S (51-55cm, age range: 8-12). It comes in Matte Blaze (orange), Matte Lollipop Fade (pink), Matte Black, and Matte Forest. It has a claimed weight of 310 grams.

Bell Full Air Mips: $330

We haven’t seen a ton of new stuff from Bell in recent years, so it was refreshing to see the brand debut two new models at Sea Otter. The Full Air Mips is a new lightweight dedicated full face model. It’s the brand’s solution for riders seeking big ventilation with a permanently attached chin bar. It carries all of the usual certifications, plus it’s DH, BMX, and E-bike certified. It has a claimed weight of 730 grams in size medium, which is quite lightweight for a DH-certified full-face helmet.

With the Full Air, it seems Bell was trying to blend the protection of a full-face helmet with the comfort of a half-shell. It has a lightweight in-mold, dual-density EPS foam and polycarbonate shell construction with lots of vents and channels to keep air moving around the head. They refer to it as a modular system, but the temple and cheek pads are removable, so you can opt for more airflow or more security/stability, depending on your needs.

Inside, the MIPS Evolve liner aims to reduce the rotational forces from impacts. The antimicrobial liner/padding is removable and washable, and Bell included its unique Sweat Guide system that draws sweat away from your eyewear rather than letting it drip right onto it. A Fidlock magnetic buckle quickly and easily secures the strap under your chin.

The Full Air Mips has a 2-position Flying Bridge visor to stash goggles when not in use. The front, center vent also has an integrated quick-release camera mount with a breakaway feature so you can easily and safely capture the action. It comes in four sizes, S-XL, and is currently offered in eight color options.

Bell 3QTR Air Mips: $280

With the 3QTR Air Mips, Bell essentially took the Full Air and removed the chin bar. Otherwise, it looks nearly identical in its design, tech, and features to its full face sibling. This helmet fills the gap between a half-shell and a full-face helmet for riders who want or need extra head protection but don’t want to ride with a chin bar.

Other than the lack of the chin bar, the helmet’s construction appears to be the same, as are all of the features. It employs the same in-mold dual-density EPS and polycarbonate shell construction, the Mips Evolve rotational impact protection system, a removable, washable, antimicrobial liner, and removable temple pads. It also has a 2-position adjustable visor, an integrated quick-release/breakaway action camera mount, and a Fidlock magnetic buckle.

Without the chinbar, the 3QTR Air Mips loses the DH and BMX certifications, but it still carries the NTA 8776 E-Bike certification plus all of the standard issue certs as well. Ditching the chinbar also reduces the weight, and the 3QTR Air weighs a claimed 650 grams in a size medium. It comes in four sizes, S-XL, and is claimed to fit heads between 51 and 63 cm.

Specialized is back with the latest version of their popular trail helmet, the Ambush 3. The helmet addresses common rider complaints about all helmets, not just Specialized: heat buildup, poor ventilation, and integration issues with accessories.

In order to allow for larger vent openings without compromising safety standards, the helmet incorporates AirCage, which is an internal roll cage to support structural loads across the helmet. This isn’t the first time internal roll cages have been used in helmets for good reason – the internal supports allows designers to add massive vents without the EPS just exploding upon impact.

Taking advantage of that structure, the helmet features a 4D Cooling system that includes a widened mouth port for air intake, longitudinal vents with deep internal channels for airflow acceleration, and rear exhaust ports for heat release. The system works in conjunction with the AirCage to move air from front to back through the helmet. Compared to the previous Ambush 2, the Ambush 3 has more vents, specifically right across the forehead area. It also has an adjustable visor now (more on that below), and a cleaner profile.

Another big change is the addition of the BOA Fit System with FS1 technology (their name for the helmet dial), and Mips Air Node Pro impact protection. The combination is good for a Virginia Tech 5-Star safety rating. Just as importantly, BOA and Specialized seem to have cracked the code here for implementing the BOA system in a comfortable way. One of my complaints about existing BOA helmets has been that the cord was allowed to dig into your temple, which is made worse if you don’t have much hair. Here, the cord is captured in a guide that is tucked under the padding. The result is a snug but comfortable fit that doesn’t leave you with deep lines embedded in your temples after you ride.

As mentioned, the helmet now includes a 4-way adjustable breakaway visor. To allow for light and camera mounting, the visor itself has a flat spot on the top that is the perfect size for an adhesive GoPro mount or similar. However, if you want to run a light or camera on your visor, you’ll ned to use the Visor Lock tab, which pops into the visor adjustment slot and prevents it from moving. Realistically, this tab is so small, you’re going to have to try really hard not to lose it, but it does have a small hole that could be used to tie it to your camera/light bag. Our sample helmet has a bit of play in the visor adjustment system, which causes a bit of a rattle, but we’re hoping to get it swapped out to confirm it as an isolated issue.


Additionally, you’ll find hidden sunglass storage, adjustable (fore/aft) TriFix ear splitters, and a FIDLOCK magnetic buckle system.

The fit is quite good, and seems to match the claims from Specialized that the compact shell sits closer to your head.

Sweet Protection’s new Tucker III 2Vi Mips aero road helmet made its World Tour debut during the 2025 Tour de France, when Jonas Abrahamsen of the Uno-X Mobility Cycling Team rode it to a stage victory. Since then, it has continued to be refined and shaped into the brand’s most advanced aerodynamic road bike helmet yet (other than the Redeemer TT Helmet, of course). Now, the helmet that has been “engineered for speed and designed to take the lead” is finally available for purchase.

According to the brand, “the Tucker III 2Vi Mips combines cutting-edge aerodynamic engineering, lightweight construction, and race-validated safety technology. Emphasizing safety, comfort, and speed, this specifically designed helmet is for going fast while conserving energy and enhancing overall performance when breaking away from the pack.” Let’s check it out.

Tucker III 2Vi MIPS Details

According to Sweet Protection, the new Tucker III 2Vi Mips aero helmet was developed in collaboration with the Uno-X Cycling Mobility Team, along with engineering expertise from Formula 1 aerodynamicist Kyle Forster. As such, every detail of the helmet has been aerodynamically optimized to reduce drag, with extensive wind-tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.

With a generally smooth outer shell, aero sculpting at the rear, and slightly chamfered vent edges to reduce turbulence, Sweet Protection says the Tucker III is designed to perform in aggressive riding positions at speeds between 45 and 50 km/h. The brand states that the Tucker III reduces aerodynamic drag by up to 10 watts at race speed compared to its Falconer Aero 2Vi Mips road helmet.

At the same time, it “delivers outstanding ventilation with optimized front vents, an advanced internal airflow structure, and a rear duct that efficiently expels fast-moving air.” According to Sweet Protection, the Tucker III improves ventilation by 150% over its predecessor, which is quite significant. By balancing aerodynamics and ventilation, the brand hopes to enhance comfort and temperature regulation during intense efforts. 

The Tucker III 2Vi Mips includes the brand’s signature 360 Occigrip fit system for optimized comfort, stability, and on-the-fly adjustability, plus it’s ponytail compatible. Sweet also added ports with eyewear grippers to stash your shades on the helmet, and they even include snap-on covers to close them up to maintain aerodynamics on race day.

The Tucker III 2Vi Mips incorporates the brand’s signature 2Vi helmet safety technology. This is a holistic approach that includes Mips Air Node integrated into the helmet padding, plus internal Impact Shields, which refer to different densities of foam added to the corners of the helmet for impact protection. It carries CE EN 1078 (EU) and CPSC 1203 (US) certifications, but it has not been tested or rated by Virginia Tech yet.

Like most aero road helmets, the Tucker III 2Vi Mips isn’t the lightest around. But with a claimed weight of 320 grams (M/L), Sweet says that it is 10% lighter than its predecessor, making it competitive amongst other aero lids.

Recently, POC quietly added the brand-new Cularis Pure to its mountain bike helmet lineup. It’s almost an exact copy of the brand’s standard Cularis helmet, which made waves last year when it launched with the top score in Virginia Tech’s safety ratings. The new Pure version shares the same shell but has some subtle differences, as well as the not-so-subtle interchangeable cover design. 

POC refers to these as “interchangeable peak covers,” and they are essentially snap-on plastic shells covering the top of the head, including the visor, or peak, if you will. With these swappable covers, users can choose between wide open vents for maximum airflow or fully covered vents for weather protection. It’s a fairly novel design, making it an adaptable helmet for a wide range of conditions, plus it’s reportedly got a 5-star Virginia Tech rating..

POC Cularis Pure Details

Until you look closely, the Cularis Pure looks incredibly similar to the standard Cularis. In fact, the shell is almost an exact match, with the same silhouette, level of head coverage, and a matching ventilation layout. The primary difference is that the visor is a continuation of the interchangeable cover, which straightens out that line a bit. Instead of fittings for a visor, the Pure has four indentations for the snap attachments that hold the interchangeable covers in place.

Like the standard Cularis, the Pure has a lightweight polycarbonate shell with an in-mold EPS foam liner. It has extended coverage at the back of the head and the temples, and a relatively deep fit. Inside, it uses a more traditional MIPS Evolve Core liner for rotational impact protection, and the padding is attached directly to the liner. This is one of the differences between the Pure and the standard Cularis, which uses MIPS Air Node, and has MIPS integrated into the padding itself.

At the back of the head, the dial for the 360° adjustment system makes it easy to add or remove tension for security and stability. The occipital cradle also has three positions of height adjustment to optimize its comfort and fit. The straps have an adjustable Y-shaped splitter around the ears, which I found to be easier to adjust than most, along with a standard plastic buckle to connect them under the chin.

The Cularis Pure does have a visor, but given that it is attached to the interchangeable covers, it is not adjustable. In my limited experience, it is in what I’d call the ideal position to provide some sun blocking ability while not being in my field of view. With the snap-on attachment of the covers, POC says they are designed to break away in the event of a crash.

Like the Cularis, the Pure has an “eye garage” with grippy material added to a couple of the front vents to hold onto your sunglass arms. This works with the ventilated cover, but those vents are inaccessible when the protective cover is attached.

Interchangeable Covers

The most unique feature of the Cularis Pure is undoubtedly the interchangeable covers. With this system, riders can choose to leave the vents wide open to enjoy the prodigious airflow the Cularis is known for. Or, they can switch to the protective, closed vent cover for use during cold and/or wet conditions. 

For clarity, the protective cover fully blocks the 3 vents on the top of the head, but it only partially blocks the front vents. Air that passes under the visor will still pass through the front vents, into the internal channels, and pass out the rear exhaust vents. From my brief experience, there’s more airflow than I expected, probably about 60%, but that’s just a guess. It’s warmer than the vented cover, but not way warmer. And on really wet days, it seems like the cover will block most of the moisture that would otherwise reach your head.

Another possibility with the interchangeable cover design of the Cularis Pure is using it without either of the covers. While most people buying a helmet like this probably won’t do that, I can’t see any reason why someone couldn’t. Without a cover attached, it’s basically a visor-less road or gravel helmet, although the snap indentations look a little odd.

Weight

My size large POC Cularis Pure weighs in at 408 grams on my scale, which is just 2 grams less than POC’s claimed weight of 410 grams. POC lists the claimed weight of the small at 370 grams, and the medium at 380 grams.

For comparison, my size large Cularis (non-Pure) weighs 441 grams on my scale. It seems that the adjustable visor, Aramid bridges, Recco reflector, and Fidlock buckle — the features not included on the Pure model — add up to be ~30 grams heavier.

Safety Rating

As of today, the Cularis Pure does not appear on the list of helmets tested by Virginia Tech’s helmet lab. But I’m told by the folks at POC that it has been tested and scored well enough to rank among the 5-star-rated helmets; it just hasn’t been added to the list yet. The standard Cularis is currently ranked #4 among all bicycle helmets tested and #2 among mountain bike helmets on the list.

While one could expect the Pure version to perform similarly, it would be presumptuous, given that they are not identical helmets. The Pure lacks the Aramid bridge reinforcements and uses a different MIPS system than the standard Cularis, both of which may affect its performance in impact testing. That said, with the recently recalibrated star rating system, the 5-star rating is less common, so it’s impressive to hear that the Cularis Pure scored well enough to get there. We’ll update with the actual score and ranking when we find out more.

Colors

The Cularis Pure has POC’s distinctive styling and is currently being offered in six color options. The Uranium Black Matte is solid black and is by far the most subtle. It also comes in Uranium Black Matte/Hydrogen White, Hydrogen White/Uranium Black Matte, Mineral Grey/Hydrogen White Matte, Bronzite Brown/Lazurite Blue, and the eye-catching Rhos Red Matte/Citrine Yellow Matte.

Sizing

The Cularis Pure comes in three sizes: Small (51-54 cm), Medium (55-58 cm), and Large (59-62 cm).

First Impressions

I got my hands on the Cularis Pure last week and have managed to get a couple of rides in it so far. The recent weather has been mostly very pleasant and unseasonably warm, and I’ve been using the vented cover, which allows plenty of airflow. I also got out for a ride with a high temperature of 50° F and gusty winds, and used the protective cover. It definitely blocks wind from coming straight through from the top of the helmet, but when I was moving quickly, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of airflow from front to back. The covers are quick and easy to swap, with just 4 snaps securing them on the helmet. This design is definitely interesting, and I can see how it could be very useful for riding in cooler temperatures, wet conditions, or both.

Aside from not being able to adjust the visor’s position, the interchangeable covers don’t seem to affect the helmet’s performance in any other way. If cool temps or inclement weather are typical challenges you face, the flexibility of the Cularis Pure’s design could help you address that. I have a friend who doesn’t have much hair on the top of his head and complains about getting sunburn on his scalp through his helmet vents. This interchangeable cover design could, unintentionally, also be a solution to that issue.

With a 59cm head, I’m almost always on the cusp between medium and large helmets, and I can usually wear either size. Not so with POC helmets. POC’s sizing doesn’t overlap like most other brands, plus its helmets run a bit narrower, so I’m unable to fit comfortably into a medium. That said, the large fits me well, is quite comfortable, and has a relatively deep fit with a reassuring amount of head coverage.

Beyond that, the Cularis Pure has faded into the background on my test rides so far. It’s comfortable, stable, and secure, with good ventilation and a protective feel. I’ll probably complain about the non-adjustable visor at some point, but so far it hasn’t been problematic with the sun higher in the sky. Otherwise, it seems like a novel approach to helmet design that might address the needs of riders seeking an adaptable helmet for varying weather conditions.

These days, it seems like it’s becoming increasingly common for brands to launch new helmets along with news of their chart-topping Virginia Tech Ratings. And that’s exactly what PIKIO (pronounced P Q) LABS is doing with its new Si road cycling helmet, featuring the brand’s OBLIK impact management technology. But unlike most new helmets, which have incrementally better scores than the last, PIKIO LABS has essentially dropped the floor out from under the competition. 

With Virginia Tech’s test lab becoming the de facto source for comparative impact testing, it seems to have sparked some competition among helmet brands. In recent years, we’ve seen the scores in Virginia Tech’s ratings creep lower and lower, with a lower score equating to better performance in its standardized impact testing. Because helmets have been scoring so much better and, presumably, been getting safer, Virginia Tech even recalibrated its star-rating scale last year to account for it. 

And with new helmet models and impact-management technologies hitting the market, the scores keep going down, but the margins have typically been by fractions. Which is why the new PIKIO LABS Si helmet’s score is so impressive. With a score of 4.61, the Si helmet is 2.21 points lower than the #2 rated helmet, the Canyon Deflectr RLS at 6.82. That’s not an incremental step forward, that’s a leap. So, who is PIKIO LABS, and what’s up with this new Si road helmet and its OBLIK technology?

PIKIO LABS

According to the press release, “PIKIO LABS Inc. is a Canada-based company advancing helmet technology through research-driven engineering, biomimicry, and structural optimization.” The company founder and CEO, Dr. Daniel Abram, has a PhD in Design Optimization and “has spent more than 17 years developing head protection technologies,” including the brand’s OBLIK impact management technology.

This is the first we’ve ever heard of PIKIO LABS, and it appears that the Si road helmet is the brand’s first and only commercial product. On the PIKIO website, however, they state that the Si helmet is the result of “years of structural research, test and refinement.” Let’s see what it’s all about.

PIKIO Si Helmet

On the surface, the new PIKIO LABS Si helmet just looks like a standard helmet. It doesn’t have the most exciting appearance. In fact, it kinda looks a little bland. But according to PIKIO, that’s a deliberate choice to reduce the chances of the helmet’s outer shell catching on surfaces during a crash. Along with its appearance, the brand states that the helmet is engineered to combine its OBLIK impact management, ventilation, comfort features, and structure as a unified system.

OBLIK

The brand’s OBLIK impact management system is the biggest story here. It operates on the same principle popularized by MIPS, reducing rotational forces transmitted to the brain during oblique impacts, but with a unique approach that appears effective, given its impressive Virginia Tech score.

Conventional helmets generally rely on a single foam liner designed to crush under load. Some designs incorporate a low-friction slip layer intended to help reduce rotational forces. While these approaches are effective to a degree, they are inherently constrained by the internal geometry of the helmet, which can limit how linear and rotational forces are managed during oblique impacts. We developed OBLIK to allow the helmet structure itself to respond more adaptively to oblique impacts.

The OBLIK system relies on “independent modules” and a “deflection-sensitive nodal system.”

How is OBLIK different? Well, the brand tells us that “Rather than relying on a single foam liner, OBLIK divides the helmet’s shock-absorbing liner into a base liner and independently moving modules connected through a deflection-sensitive nodal system. During impact, individual modules can move based on impact intensity, location, and direction, helping reduce linear and rotational forces.” We’ve seen numerous dual-shell designs before, but what stands out about OBLIK to us is that each piece of inner liner appears to be separate, allowing them to move independently and more locally as they respond to the forces of an impact. 

PIKIO’s founder, Daniel Abram, tells us that the large jump in the impact testing score has to do with the fact that the OBLIK system has eliminated some of the constraints of more traditional designs. He says, “Rather than compressing material in one direction, the system is able to deform, redirect, and dissipate energy across multiple pathways. This becomes particularly important in oblique impacts, where linear and rotational forces occur simultaneously.

Additionally, the brand states that the dual-layer, dual-density structure uses “macro-cavities.” If you’re wondering what a macro-cavity is, it is described as being inspired by bone structure and is an engineered void integrated into the liner structure that helps to absorb impact while reducing material and weight.

PIKIO Si Design Features

  • Modular Impact Architecture: Discrete modules are individually attached to a base liner.
  • Deflection-Sensitive Nodal System: Nodal interfaces allow modules to move independently based on the intensity, location, and direction of the impact force.
  • Biomimicry-Based Macro Cavities: Bone-inspired internal macro-cavities in the foam enhance energy absorption through deformation and compression.
  • Dual-Density Foams: Optimized foam densities for both low- and high-energy impacts.
  • Reinforced Layers: Polycarbonate reinforcement integrated into the modules to increase structural strength while maintaining low weight.
  • Aerodynamic and Ventilated: Aero performance and airflow comparable to leading premium road helmets. Wind tunnel testing was conducted at the University of British Columbia’s Aerolab.
  • Integrated Eyewear Dock: Built-in eyewear dock allows convenient storage of sunglasses when not in use.

Aerodynamics and Ventilation

PIKIO claims that “OBLIK improves ventilation through continuous deep airflow channels, larger strategically placed true-vents, and reduced internal material blockage.” Additionally, PIKIO says that wind tunnel testing at the University of British Columbia’s Aerolab confirmed aerodynamic performance “comparable to leading premium road helmets.

Weight

PIKIO states that OBLIK technology improves safety without adding extra weight. With claimed weights of 255g (S), 279g (M), and 298g (L), the Si helmet is not exactly in the running for the lightweight crown, but it’s certainly not what we’d call “heavy,” either.

In addition to the Si helmet’s chart-topping Virginia Tech score and 5-star rating, it is also certified to the U.S. CPSC Bicycle Helmet Standard.
